Assad allies say US attack on Syria air base crosses 'red lines'

He stopped short of accusing Russian Federation of being directly involved in the planning or execution of the attack, saying he had not seen "any hard evidence" to suggest the nation was an accomplice to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Images of civilians suffering the apparent effects of a gas attack, including convulsions, vomiting and foaming at the mouth, provoked worldwide outrage and prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to order a strike on a Syrian airbase.

The US cruise missile strikes on Friday were in retaliation to the gas attack, but Mr Lavrov accused America of threatening global security.

The United States is vowing to keep up the pressure on Syria after the intense nighttime wave of missile strikes from U.S. ships, despite the prospect of escalating Russian ill will that could further inflame one of the world's most vexing conflicts.

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley said that new actions could be taken against Syria. "We know there's not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime", she said. Haley said that it was hard to see a peaceful and stable Syria with Assad as president [CNN report], based on his action and the current situation in Syria. And then we've got to go and make sure that we actually see a leader that will protect his people.

Trump is increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to abandon Assad just as U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is visiting Moscow.

"We believe that the first priority is the defeat of ISIS".

U.S. Secretary State Rex Tillerson arrived in Moscow Tuesday with less ammunition than Washington and London had hoped he would have in his bid to convince Russian Federation to abandon Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Haley said on Sunday that it was up to the United States to take some burden in reacting to atrocities like this. "Someone who uses barrel bombs and chemicals to kill his own people simply can not be the future leader of Syria".

But there have been repeated allegations of chemical weapons use since. "When you kill innocent children, innocent babies - babies, little babies - with a chemical gas that is so lethal - people were shocked to hear what gas it was - that crosses many, many lines, beyond a red line", Trump had said during a news conference Wednesday referring to the attack that was allegedly carried out by the Syrian government.

Tillerson insisted he had no concerns about possible Russian retaliation after the United States attack on the airbase. But Trump ignores his own statements on the 2013 chemical weapons attack.

Boris Johnson will push leading nations to demand Russian Federation withdraws its forces from Syria when he meets counterparts for talks in Italy next week.

Numerous Western powers, including the United States, blamed the government of Bashar al-Assad of the attack.

Russian Federation meanwhile said a decision by the British foreign secretary to cancel a visit to Moscow later this month showed a lack of understanding of events in Syria.

On Sunday, Russia's Foreign Ministry criticised a decision by British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to cancel a visit to Moscow later this month, saying it showed a lack of understanding of events in Syria.
