Blues found Allen 'amazing to watch' in Game 1 win over Wild

The Blues won Game 1 of the series on Wednesday, 2-1 in OT.

Playing 4-on-4 after Charlie Coyle and Scottie Upshall went to the penalty box for matching roughing minors, Schwartz fired a shot through a screen in front of Devan Dubnyk, beating the Wild goaltender under the crossbar for his first goal of the playoffs.

From the Wild's perspective, it's tough to drop one at home to open the series.

With Yeo now directing strategy, using to his advantage almost five years of insight into the Wild's personalities, preferences and tendencies, the Blues kept up their stifling defense by packing those big bodies in the middle of their zone.

"Fifty-something saves is pretty remarkable", said Blues defenseman Joel Edmondson, who notched the overtime victor on Wednesday.

"I think we're going to get some breaks around the net".

"We didn't have the puck enough, and that's an issue", St. Louis coach Mike Yeo told reporters. We know that. We're going to have to be on our toes, and that's the way they play. Graff wrote that Yeo implied the Wild weren't getting chances from the middle of the ice. The catch is this: while the Wild have dominated the possession game by a wide margin, the Blues have done a phenomenal job of preventing high-danger scoring chances.

Crosby had a goal and two assists, Guentzel scored the first National Hockey League playoff goal. and Sheary added a brilliant secondary assist as the Penguins rolled by the frustrated Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Friday in Game 2 of the first-round series.

That essentially makes Game 2 Friday at Xcel Energy Center a must-win, although the Wild won't flat-out say it.

Zach Parise has, essentially, been the only player who's been able to beat Allen, an unusual sign for a Wild team that's enjoyed deploying waves of attackers during their best moments.

And when his defensemen weren't a half-step ahead of the Wild, Allen turned into a 6-foot-2 rabbit's foot, and the Wild shot the puck wide or into the side of the net, or directly into Allen's stomach. It was a big game for Allen. Both goalies made saves left and right throughout the period, taking us to the final minute of the period.

"That's playoff hockey. Sometimes it's a unusual game", said Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, who made 24 saves. From the beginning of March through the end of the regular season, Dubnyk, who was considered a lock for a Vezina finalist position previously, posted a.895 save percentage in 17 appearances.

Unfortunately for the Wild, it was the only goal it would get on the night.

Who takes home Game 2?

They're sometimes derided for it.

Game 3: Sunday, April 16, Minnesota at St. Louis, 2 p.m.

The Blues weren't flawless in Game 1-far from it.

Joel Ward and Paul Martin scored for San Jose. Jake Allen was remarkable for St. Louis.

The odds are with the Wild if they continue to outshoot the Blues like they did Wednesday.

Game 1 was an anomaly, as Minnesota led in every major category, yet somehow came up short. Still, the Wild know what's at stake on Friday. if you let an underdog stick around for too long, they start to believe. Vladimir Tarasenko's incredible shot and strength.

The first game of the series evolved into the Jake Allen story: Allen made 51 saves and missed only a shot by Zach Parise with Minnesota's goalie pulled and just 23 seconds remaining in the third period.
