'Boss Baby,' 'Beauty' outshine 'Smurfs 3' at box office

Lost Village, costing a reported $60 million to make, will have to do huge business overseas if Sony gets its wish.

The weekend belonged to family-friendly holdovers "Boss Baby", which took first place, and "Beauty and the Beast" in second place.

Disney's fourth weekend of "Beauty and the Beast" will finish a close second with about $25.2 million at 4,210 venues in what will be the 10th-highest fourth weekend of all time. In four weeks, Disney's live-action fairy tale has earned $432.3 million domestically.

In box office flop news, "Smurfs: The Lost Village" brought in an estimated $14 million domestically in its debut weekend, confirming that not every old cartoon needs three full-length feature films in six years. The studio's live action-CGI "The Smurfs" grossed $563.7 million globally in 2011, followed by 2013's "The Smurfs 2", which made $347.5 million worldwide on a $105 million budget. Rainn Wilson, Joe Manganiello and Jack McBrayer are among the voice cast and Kelly Asbury (Gnomeo & Juliet) directed.

New Line's launch of senior-citizen heist comedy "Going in Style" is following in fourth with about $12.1 million at 3,061 sites - well above recent expectations, which had forecast a quiet finish around $8 million. Russian Federation accounted for $24 million, while Mexico did $12 million, and it grossed $10 million in the United Kingdom and slightly less in France. Nabbing an A+ CinemaScore, Case for Christ stars Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway and Robert Forster. The faith-based drama, from Pure Flix Films, tells the real-life story of a self-avowed atheist and journalist who sets out to disprove his wife's newfound Christian faith.

The box office beast also added another $36 million overseas this weekend to bring its worldwide total to $545 million, putting it just $23 million away from hitting the $1 billion global benchmark. After 10 days, the animated movie has made almost 90 million dollars, and has a foreign total that matches the domestic one.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Smurfs are feeling a little blue this weekend. Rolling out in 56 locations, the drama opened to $476,000.

In limited release, the Chris Evans drama "Gifted" took in $476,000 from 56 theaters, while the World War II drama "Their Finest" grossed $77,000 from four screens in NY and Los Angeles.
