Demand to see Trump's tax returns will only grow

Thousands of people marched through Manhattan and several other cities in the United States on Saturday, demanding President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

Trump tweeted Sunday: "I did what was an nearly an impossible thing to do for a Republican-easily won the Electoral College!"

Protesters in Raleigh said they believed Trump's refusal to release his tax returns was a worrying sign. In West Palm Beach, some of those marching said they'd taken part in protests nearly every weekend since Trump was sworn in.

Dozens of protesters were calling on him to release his tax returns.

Ilene Singh said she and her friend, Geraldine Markowitz, took a bus from New Jersey to join the crowd and "say we care" about Trump's taxes.

Last year, Donald Trump became the first major-party political nominee in over 40 years to choose not to release his federal taxes.

Because the traditional Tax Day for 2017 fell on a weekend, American citizens have until Tuesday, April 18 to file their tax returns this year.

At least 21 demonstrators were arrested after Trump opponents and supporters clashed at a march in Berkeley, California, US media said.

Liberal activists last weekend took to the streets in cities such as Washington, D.C., NY and Los Angeles in an attempt to convince Trump to allow the American people to have a look at his filings.

Ms McCaughey told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Most people who run for president are just career politicians, they make their money giving speeches and writing books, they have very very simple tax returns".

"You don't know which way the country goes", said Arlin next to her 89-year-old husband who fled Czechoslovakia during World War II. And Republican Rep. Jeff Denham of California added, "I'm not going to ask the previous President that I served under to show his birth certificate any more than I would ask this President to show his taxes".

"His reputation.as a businessman and, more importantly, as a true American, a person who is concerned with American values, would be totally destroyed if all his financial information was made public", said Mike Mannshardt, a retired teacher. A poll taken in January, the results of which we have no reason to doubt still hold true, found that three of every four Americans - including a majority of Republicans - think Trump should release his tax returns.

And making the audits automatic may have been meant to bolster public confidence that the IRS will audit presidents of both parties and not let it become something the agency does at its discretion, according to tax lawyer Steven Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center.
