Do we need another wireless carrier? Who cares! Comcast is here anyways

The new service is meant to be an additional complement to Comcast's existing options for customers and is expected to launch later this year.

Xfinity Mobile's phones will be connecting up to towers operated by Verizon Wireless for their cellular coverage. Prices looked comparable to other major carriers; you'll be able to pay up front for your phone, or over a 24-month payment period.

The basic features are available only with an internet subscription.

Also of note: Comcast says it will not exempt its own video services from taking up data over Xfinity Mobile.

The company did not discuss pricing for mobile devices, but noted that it will support popular offerings from companies such as Apple and Samsung. If a customer moves out of range of a Comcast hotspot, the user's Internet connection will drop until the mobile device re-establishes Verizon connectivity.

Comcast says that - since it's targeting existing subscribers - it will benefit from low costs to acquire customers, and then serve and bill them. Comcast will start selling cellphone plans called Xfinity Mobile in the coming months, using a network it's leasing from Verizon. Butz is known for having spearheaded the creation of Comcast's Xfinity Store chain.

And that's really the best comparison of Xfinity Mobile; this service is very much like Project Fi.

Comcast operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network, comprised of 16 million hotspots, including some that are installed in customers' homes and businesses, executives said today.

Comcast already pipes internet into millions of homes, and now it wants to take its service to the airwaves.

Similar to telecom carriers' policies, Comcast will slow download speeds for unlimited customers after they use 20 gigabytes in a month.

Comcast said that this demonstrated the importance of Wi-Fi in mobile data consumption. Most notably, AT&T announced its eyebrow-raising $85 billion deal to buy media company Time Warner (TWX - Free Report) previous year, in addition to its various moves to diversify into the entertainment industry, like its purchase of DirecTV.

In recent months, the four major USA wireless carriers - Verizon Communications Inc VZ.N , AT&T Inc T.N , T-Mobile US Inc TMUS.O and Sprint Corp S.N - have offered unlimited data plans ranging from $50 a month for a single line to $90 a month. You can also switch between the two tiers freely, so one month you can have unlimited and the next month you pay by the gig.

Xfinity Mobile is not immediately available, but will launch sometime later this year. Seems like a deal before you realize how much cash you're shoveling in Comcast's direction under the guise of a getting good deal. Comcast last fall had announced its intentions to enter the wireless business by mid-2017. "That intense focus in our core cable business -we know we need to get better and improve the customer service and customer experience".
