Enormous iceberg causes tourists to flock to tiny Newfoundland town

Iceberg Newfoundland

"It's the biggest one I have ever seen around here", Ferryland mayor Aidan Kavanagh told the Canadian Press.

One of the first massive icebergs of the season looks grounded in shallow water, just off the coast of Ferryland, Canada.

Ferryland, Newfoundland, is host to a special visitor, as seen here on Sunday: a giant iceberg, the first of the season. Passersby have begun to crowd Newfoundland's coastal streets for a photo opp with the large iceberg, as the potential exists for more glacier pieces to appear in the coming weeks and months.

According to the BBC, the icebergs often float by Newfoundland during the spring and summer months because they break off of larger pieces of sea ice further north in the arctic region. Greenland's ice sheets are accelerating their ice shedding which is resulting in more, and bigger, icebergs. Another local estimated the iceberg's highest point is roughly 150 feet. Those icebergs may also pass close by if the wind keeps blowing in the same direction.

It's hard to assign a single cause to the phenomenon, though the Associated Press noted earlier this month that rising Arctic temperatures and increased winds had pushed hundreds of icebergs from off coast of Greenland into North Atlantic shipping lanes months ahead of schedule.

People can take boat tours, paddle past the ice chunks in a kayak or go on a hike along the coast to get a glimpse of and photograph the icebergs. Last year, 687 icebergs were spotted from the start of the year to September, according to CTV.

An iceberg floating past your window doesn't sound like something you'd readily get used to, but for the residents of Newfoundland in Canada, it's business as usual.
