Ethiopia's champions in Boston to defend marathon titles

It would be five more years before women were officially invited to race in the Boston Marathon, but Switzer's actions during the 1967 race are remembered as the trail-blazing effort that propelled women into competitive running alongside men.

Already a silver medalist and USA record-holder in the 10,000 meters, he ran the fastest marathon time ever for an American in the Summer Games: 2 hours, 10 minutes, 5 seconds.

A four-time Olympian who earned a silver medal in Athens in 2004 and won the 2009 New York City Marathon - both times also ending long American droughts - Keflezighi's 2014 win in Boston is one of the signature moments in the race's century-old history.

Kiplagat established herself as an elite-runner when she won the Los Angeles and New York City Marathons in 2010.

Kiplagat won the women's 15-kilometer race in the 2010 Boilermaker with a course-record time of 47 minutes, 57 seconds.

American Jordan Hasay set a record for an American women's debut marathon, coming in third in 2:23:00.

American Jordan Hasay, making her first run at the 26.2-mile distance, was third and Desi Linden was fourth - the first time since 1991 that two US women have finished in the top four.

Hayle gave Ethiopia its first-ever sweep a year ago when he pulled away from countryman and two-time champion (2013, 2015) Lelisa Desisa with about a mile to go to join Baysa on the victory stand.

A tailwind of 13 miles per hour gave the runners a push at the start on Monday.

"I want people to know it's back to normal", he said. Fellow Swiss Manuela Schar shattered the women's mark by more than five minutes, winning in 1:28:17.

The American drought reached more than three decades from the time Greg Meyer won in 1983 until Meb Keflezighi ran down Boylston Street to raucous chants of "U-S-A!" in 2014, the year after the finish line bombings killed three people and wounded more than 260 others.

Kathrine Switzer was told that running a marathon was impossible.

If he finishes, the 32-year-old Kenyan will be the first professional to complete all six major marathons plus the world championships and the Olympics. Sculptor Pablo Eduardo will create the markers. Along the way, they were expected to be slowed by temperatures rising into the 70s.

Update 10:55 a.m.: Though some athletes have already completed the marathon's 26.2 miles, others haven't even started the race yet.

Geoffrey Kirui, of Kenya, crosses the finish line to win the 121st Boston Marathon on Monday, April 17, 2017, in Boston.
