Facebook Cracks Down on Revenge Porn

Facebook has introduced new tools to try and stop the spread of revenge porn

After the report of an image, the social media site uses photo-matching and AI technologies to make users not to share it on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram.

The move on the part of Facebook to prevent revenge porn from spreading comes at a time when Facebook, Twitter (TWTR) and Alphabet's Google (GOOG) are facing criticism due to fake news, inappropriate content and even violence on Facebook Live.

"We're focused on building a community that keeps people safe", Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.

Photo-matching technologies will be used to prevent the same pictures being shared across Facebook, its Messenger service or Facebook-owned Instagram.

All an end user has to do is report an intimate image that he or she suspects was shared without permission.

Revenge porn is the sharing of private sexual images without the subject's consent. Users will then be asked to provide a reason for reporting the image.

If you're unaware, revenge porn is when people share intimate photos of their partner online - usually, after one of them is scorned post break up.

"Specially trained representatives... review the image and remove it if it violates our Community Standards". However, if an image has been taken down in error, the company is offering an "appeals process" to restore the image.

The proposed system is similar to the existing image detection and security features on Facebook, which blocks anti-Semitic and offensive content.

"We also restrict some images of female breasts if they include the nipple, but we always allow photos of women actively engaged in breastfeeding or showing breasts with post-mastectomy scarring", it said. The company will alert anyone that it is a violation of its policies to share any reported or removed images. The social networking site has also launched a revenge porn guide specific to Facebook, named, "Not Without My Consent".

In a statement, the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative said that Facebook has now "raised the bar for the tech industry's response to online abuse".

Davis told the BBC that the company is working towards finding a way to prevent initial posting of such imagery, but in the meantime they're still depending on users to flag images.
