Facebook Murder Suspect Takes His Own Life After Police Chase

Police said he died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday afternoon after a brief pursuit by Pennsylvania state police.

Responding troopers spotted Stephens leaving the restaurant in Erie and went after him, bumping his vehicle to try to get it to stop, authorities said. When the vehicle fled, officers followed in a short pursuit.

"This started with one tragedy and ended with another person ending their life", Chief Williams said at a press conference, notes The Daily Mail.

Stephens shot and killed himself on Tuesday after he was charged with aggravated murder early Monday after fatally shooting an innocent 74-year-old man named Robert Godwin Sr. and streaming the murder live on Facebook on Easter Sunday.

PBS NewsHour will update this story as it develops. He offered his condolences and reiterated the company's position that it will review its "reporting flows" so that users can flag video and other content that violates its policies.

Stephens supposedly killed Godwin in an attempt to get his mother and girlfriend to get in contact with him.

A five-state manhunt was launched to find Stephens after the children's mental health worker vowed to "keep killing until they (police) catch me".

Taking the stage one hour after suspect Steve Stephens apparently shot and killed himself in Pennsylvania, the Facebook CEO told the crowd of developers, analysts, and reporters that Facebook has more work to do in making its 1.86 billion strong community safer.

Although Facebook pulled the videos and suspended Stephens' account 23 minutes after they were first reported, Zuckerberg said Facebook could do better in quickly flagging and removing violent videos.

"As a result of this awful series of events, we are reviewing our reporting flows to be sure people can report videos and other material that violates our standards as easily and quickly as possible", said Facebook in their statement. The crash is not shown on the surveillance video.

The woman, Joy Lane, told WJW-TV in Cleveland that she last talked with Stephens on Saturday night, when he told her he had quit his job and was moving out of state.

The Cleveland police thanked officers across the country as well as those behind the almost 400 tips that helped the police locate the shooter.
