Fallon: Russia responsible for 'every death' in Syria gas attack

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson makes a statement about the visit of China's President Xi Jinping and about the situation in Syria at Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach

"W$3 hile Bashar Assad can't be part of the long-term future in Syria, I think it would also be premature to say that he needs to go tomorrow, if we don't know precisely what follows", Assad said on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS".

"People of Hawaii's 2nd District - was it not enough for you that your rep met with a murderous dictator?"

President Donald Trump has spoken by telephone with South Korea's leader to discuss Syria and North Korea.

"This is a disgrace".

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the ranking Democrat member of the House Intelligence Committee, on Sunday said Trump should have received congressional approval for the airstrikes.

Russian Federation sent warplanes to Syria in 2015 in a successful effort to help Assad maintain his hold on power and expand the territory under his control.

Other security experts said much depended on the Trump administration's next steps, and how the Assad government and its Russian patrons responded.

"We have an impression that our Western colleagues are living in their own reality, in which they are trying to unilaterally build collective plans and then unilaterally change them, making up absurd pretexts", she added. Syrian rebel groups said on Friday the USA "responsibility" did not end with the missile attack. "It will not bring about an end to this war".

He said: "Assad's principal backer is Russian Federation".

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani called Assad to reaffirm his support for the Syrian leader in the wake of the USA strike, Rouhani's office said on Sunday.

There's been "no change" to the US military stance in Syria beyond the missile strike in retaliation for the Assad government's use of chemical weapons on its citizens, yet the action carries a message for other countries acting outside global norms, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said. "US aircraft operating over Al-Tabqah are already ostensibly in range of the Russian S-400 system at the Humaymin Air Base, and we might see Russia deploy more air defense assets to Syria", Jeremy Binnie, the Middle East editor of Jane's Defense Weekly, said in an e-mail. I think his statement after the strikes was a very thoughtful and responsible statement, as well.

"We deplore Russia's continued defence of the Assad regime even after the chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians".

"If you violate global agreements, if you fail to live up to commitments, if you become a threat to others, at some point a response is likely to be undertaken", he told ABC's "This Week".

Other liberal lawmakers - including the independent Vermont Sen.

But as lawmakers called on Trump to consult with Congress on future military strikes and a longer-term strategy on Syria, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley described regime change in Syria as a U.S. priority and inevitable.

On the other side of the argument was Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, who suggested the U.S. was trying to shut the Foreign Secretary out of a sensitive process.
