Google strengthens ties to Southeast Asia with new undersea cable

Undersea cables provide the lifeline for the world's internet

That's why it's so important to enable better internet connectivity across the region, and why Google, alongside AARNet, Indosat Ooredoo, Singtel, SubPartners and Telstra, is building a new worldwide subsea cable system in Southeast Asia, called INDIGO.

A large consortium of heavy hitters including Telstra, Singtel and Google has taken over the planned construction of a subsea cable to be built between Perth and Singapore.

In a joint statement, the companies said they had struck an agreement with Alcatel Submarine Networks to build the cable system, with Telstra later saying the project was worth several hundred million dollars.

Once completed, the INDIGO cable system (previously known as APX West & Central) will strengthen links between Australia and the fast-growing South East Asian markets, providing lower latency and enhanced reliability.

Called Indigo, the cable will connect Perth, Sydney and Singapore, with a branch to Jakarta. "High-speed network infrastructure availability, both into and out of Indonesia, is important for business and personal consumers in Indonesia to be able to connect to global content".

"We are delighted to be a part of the INDIGO cable system to finally realise this significant infrastructure project, and provide Australia with a new diverse worldwide route into South East Asia", he mentioned. Indigo has two fiber pairs, one-third as many as the trans-Pacific FASTER cable turned on previous year, where Google was also an investor.

Google announced Wednesday that it's investing in a new subsea cable system that will run between Australia and Asia.

This will enable members of the consortium to own spectrum on the cable, allowing them to upgrade capacity when technological advancements become available.

Using coherent optical technology, which uses light to transmit data along fibre optic cables, each of the twofibre pairs will have a minimum capacity of 18 terabits per second, with the option to increase this capacity in the future.

Singtel group enterprise vice-president of carrier services, Ooi Seng Keat, added that the construction of INDIGO is timely to meet the rising demand for high-speed broadband between Asia and Australia. "Once the cables are complete, we will have even more capacity to meet growing customer demand across the region".
