Is North Korea putting nuclear-tipped bargaining chip on table

Analysts say North Korea might time nuclear and long-range rocket tests to the April 15 birthday of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, the late grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un.

European Union sanctions against North Korea date back to 2006 and are part of worldwide efforts to halt a nuclear and ballistic missile programme which experts say is meant to give Pyongyang the capability to hit the U.S. mainland. The North conducted two nuclear tests and 24 ballistic missile tests previous year, defying six Security Council sanctions resolutions banning any testing.

North Korea's increasingly rebellious nuclear weapons programme is reported to be one of the main points of discussion during the meeting.

North Korea has stepped up the frequency of missile and nuclear weapons tests over the past two years and experts say it is closing in on the ability to hit the United States with a missile. "China summit", said Shusuke Yamada, a senior strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Tokyo.

North Korea's accelerated weapons testing schedule is likely to be high on the agenda, with the US administration previously claiming that military options and secondary financial sanctions on Chinese banks are on the table.

"The president emphasised that the United States stands with its allies Japan and South Korea in the face of the serious threat that North Korea continues to pose".

Tensions between the USA and North Korea continue to escalate as United States officials consider the best way forward.

North Korea belligerence, however, has been accompanied by increased emphasis on reconciliation with the South following the impeachment of Park Geun-hye, the former president.

The Pentagon says Wednesday's test was of an extended-range Scud missile that suffered an in-flight failure before crashing into the sea.

Initial U.S. and South Korean assessments had indicated it was an advanced KN-15 medium-range missile, whose first known test by North Korea was in February.

A senior intelligence official told the network that he doubted us and China could find a diplomatic solution to the crisis. "China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won't".

The Trump administration has been hoping to convince China to step up pressure on the reclusive North Korea government to curtail its nuclear program.

Two weeks ago, the South Korean and US militaries said they detected what they called a failed North Korean ballistic missile launch.

Satellite images of the country indicate North Korea is preparing for a large-scale parade at Mirim Airport in Pyongyang, the report stated.
