Kashmir : Policeman among several injured as students clash with law keepers

Militants open fire on security forces in Shopian

At least 50 students were injured, according to reports. The schools, colleges and other educational institutions have been closed and all university and other examinations scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed.

Police sources said the situation is tense but is under control.

Srinagar protesters chanted slogans "Go India, go back" and "We want freedom", with the rally turning violent as the police tried to stop them from marching through the city's main business area.

APHC leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who continues to be under preventive detention, denounced the use of alleged force against students, terming it as worst form of state terrorism.

Hundreds of students clashed with government forces in Indian Kashmir during protests Monday against a police raid on a college, as tensions ran high in the restive region.

When the forces cornered students at SP college in the heart of Srinagar, dozens of them entered the women's college and started pelting stones at the police. "In the resultant chaos some students received minor injuries and majority were discharged after first aid", the statement said. Colleges in Bejebehara and Khanabal are also on boil. "Now, the police are firing teargas shells inside here too", Intizar Ahmad, a student at Srinagar's Sri Pratap College, told Firstpost. "A lady constable had a fracture in her arm", it added.

Former Chief Minister and opposition National Conference (NC) working president, Omar Abdullah, questioned the handling of students' protests by the government.

"I hope Mehbooba has thought through the implications of mass student protests across the valley. This is a deeply worrying situation (sic)", he tweeted.

Students at Kashmir University also boycotted their classwork to stand in solidarity with the injured students. Police used tear smoke shells and various students are reportedly injured. The police statement had added, "The mob swelled as more students joined and pelted stones on the forces".

Meanwhile, internet facilities in the Kashmir Valley were suspended on Monday following the unprecedented protests by students, an official said.

The police had claimed that a normal naka had been established around 200 meters away from the college premises.

He said security forces asked the protesters to disperse but they did not budge and started pelting stones on the forces, leading to clashes. "To handle the stone pelting reinforcement was rushed to the spot". There was no report of any user of force by the police though the police is deployed around. In this incident some miscreants and police personnel were injured.

Injured students had to be transported to a hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment.
