Kenyans Kirui, Kiplagat win 121st Boston Marathon

The 38-year-old policewoman, who missed the cut for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, smashed her competition with an unofficial time of 2:21:53.

Switzer had no intentions of dropping out of that fateful race, nor did she expect to be such a barrier-breaker (Roberta Bingay Gibb had actually completed the Boston Marathon the year before without an official bib).

Hug outpushed 10-time victor Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa down Boylston Street to finish in an unofficial time of 1 hour, 18 minutes, 4 seconds.

Rose Chelimo of Bahrain was second today in Boston, 59 seconds behind, and American Jordan Hasay was third in her marathon debut. Olympian Desiree Linden, who was looking to become the first American to win the event, was fourth at 2:25:06.

Kirui, 24, produced a devastating sprint with four miles to go to settle an enthralling tactical battle with American rival Galen Rupp, the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist.April 17, 2017; Boston, MA, USA; Geoffrey Kirui and Galen Rupp race in the 2017 Boston Marathon.

Rupp battled desperately to stay in touch but was unable to respond as Kirui kept the pace up to leave the Oregon-based American in second in 2:09:58.

In the years that have passed since her first Boston Marathon, that original Bib number that Semple was unable to tear away has come to stand for quite a lot.

"In 2013, I was a spectator just like the three victims and when I saw the 8-year-old. the first thing in my mind was that could have been my daughter", said Keflezighi.

Kathrine Switzer, who registered for the famed race as "K.V. Switzer" in 1967 became historic because she was the first woman to complete the strictly all-male race as an official entrant as her registration name hid her gender.

Earlier Monday, city officials announced plans for memorials to mark the sites where two bombs exploded during the 2013 Boston Marathon.

But they also got a strong tailwind that could help, too.

A lot has happened since Switzer first ran the Boston Marathon in 1967.

Some runners are taking part from the other side of the St. Clair River, Ramon Ledezma from Fort Gratiot, Therese Damman from Marysville, as well as Port Huron's Robert Emmert, Steve Heithoff and Glenn Witalec.

It was with the help of her boyfriend that she managed to escape his grasp and went on to finish the race in four hours, 20 minutes - later to be disqualified and expelled from the Amateur Atheltic Union.

The elite women are on their way in the 121st running of the Boston Marathon.
