Kyrgios confident of taking down big-serving American

Kyrgios won 7-5, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) after Jordan Thompson upset Jack Sock 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 on a hard court at Pat Rafter Arena.

― Reuters picMELBOURNE, April 7 ― Nick Kyrgios eased past John Isner 7-5 7-6 (5) 7-6 (5) in a duel of big servers to fire Australia to a 2-0 lead over the United States in their Davis Cup quarter-final in Brisbane today.

Earlier, Thompson fed off the rowdy home crowd to edge Sock 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 for the biggest win of his career.

US captain Jim Courier, right, talks to Jack Sock of the U.S.at the Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinal in Brisbane, Australia, Friday, April 7, 2017.

"I played him three times and I'm a little used to the match-up", he said.

But Kyrgios recovered to win it 7-5 and then held his nerve in the second-set tiebreaker.

Australia' s Nick Kyrgios played John Isner in the second match of the series, and dominated, winning in straight sets over the American, now ranked 23 in the world.

The victor of the this quarterfinal will go on to play either Belgium or Italy in the semifinals, to be held in September.

FRANCE'S POUILLE TAKES DAVIS CUP OPENER AGAINST BRITAIN: Lucas Pouille gave hosts France a winning start in their Davis Cup quarter-final against Great Britain on Friday with a 7-5, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 victory over Kyle Edmund.

"But the way he played yesterday, he's going to have a lot of confidence going out there".

The two countries have 60 Davis Cup titles between them but Australia have not won since they bagged their 28th crown in 2003, while the United States snared their 32nd a decade ago.

"It's not every day where you get the opportunity to make the final four in Davis Cup", Hewitt said at today's draw.

They edged out Australians John Peers, ranked third in the world in doubles, and Sam Groth 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. "We weren't going to go down without a fight".

"I definitely feel like I've really put in an effort to try and do it consistently".

Success allowed Sock to gain a measure of revenge on Thompson after his surprise singles defeat to the 22-year-old, and he told daviscup.com: "Jordan played great yesterday, he deserved to win, he was the better player". That liability has turned into an enormous advantage, because all four US players (John Isner, Sock, Querrey an Johnson) are accomplished in singles as well as doubles.
