Louis voters reject funding MLS stadium

Chances St. Petersburg will get a Major League Soccer expansion franchise improved Tuesday after voters in St. Louis rejected a proposal to use public money for a new soccer stadium.

Before the Rams left for L.A., where the team eventually will play in a privately-financed stadium, the powers-that-be in St. Louis put together a package that wouldn't have required an election.

Public funding for an MLS stadium in St. Louis is dead.

The good news, sort of, is that the vote was fairly close, with "no" securing 53 percent and "yes" getting 47.

It appears St. Louis will, for now, remain a two-sport city.

St. Louis appeared to be a heavy favorite among the 12 cities seeking two MLS expansion teams for the 2020 season.

Dan Courtemanche, Major League Soccer's executive vice president of communications, released a statement via Twitter.

The Padres are looking at ways to accommodate San Diego State's football program for two years while the Soccer City stadium is built. While that certainly doesn't contradict the league's timeline-it always has said its deadline is the end of 2017-it confirms that no decision will come before then.

SC STL chairman Paul Edgerly said people "worked hard" and that the group was "disappointed for St. Louis".

Members of the group pushing to bring an MLS franchise to the city said this latest defeat is "likely the final stage of our journey".

Meanwhile, Governor Eric Greitans has let it be known that he is against using any public money for the stadium.
