Married man sends hijack hoax to avoid trip with girlfriend

Motaparthi Vamshi Krishna

Cracking the case of an anonymous email from a "woman" that some persons planned to hijack planes at airports, the Hyderabad police on Thursday zeroed in on M. Vamshi Krishna and arrested him. The man now in the custody of the Hyderabad police said that he wanted to stall his girlfriend's trip to Goa and hence he sent out the hoax mail to the Mumbai police. The email had forced airport agencies to beef up security measures at all the three airports.

The Mumbai police commissioner then informed Hyderabad police who investigated the matter and later arrested Krishna.

As there were no CCTV cameras at the internet centre, police checked the surrounding areas and found Vamshi's visuals in the CCTV footage of another internet centre. She was to take the flight out of Chennai and meet him at Mumbai before going to Goa.

"The woman started insisting on the trip but Krishna had no money to book flight tickets", Hyderabad Police Commissioner M. Mahender Reddy said. "They spoke some other things also but I (could) not hear them, as I heard only these few sentences from them". He added that Vamshi was "unable to explain to girlfriend that he had no money for the trip, Vamshi chose to create a situation so that flights are cancelled". "So his thinking was that if the flight was to be canceled and it was because of the airport, he wouldn't be at fault".

According to an NDTV report, Motaparthi Vamshi Krishna, 32, is facing four charges including impersonation and providing false information.

Police alerted airline securities to the threat and then traced the IP address to an internet cafe called E Netzone.

Speaking at a press conference, B. Limba Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Commissioner's Task Force in Hyderabad, who led the investigation, said, "He didn't have the money, but if he canceled because of that, it would have hurt his pride, and his friendship with the girl would've come to an end". Vamshi Krishna said that he had met the girl on Facebook. If convicted he could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $150.
