NCAA returns events to NC after state rolls back LGBT law

The Human Rights Campaign said in a statement: "By rewarding North Carolina with championship games, the NCAA has undermined its credibility and is sending a risky message to lawmakers across the country who are targeting LGBTQ people with discriminatory state legislation".

North Carolina is now in consideration for championship bids after NCAA officials said House Bill 142, a compromise bill to HB2, met "the minimal NCAA requirements". The law's passage previous year led to the NCAA's decision to strip North Carolina of seven championship events.

Women's Basketball: The ACC Women's Basketball Tournament will return to Greensboro for the 18th time in 19 years between February 28-March 4, 2018.

Outside of the Tar Heel state, Greenville, South Carolina earned another chance to host the first two rounds after a successful bid in 2017. The women's soccer conference championship, held in Charleston in 2016, will return in 2018. The decision comes after the state repealed elements of a law that limited protections for LGBT people and put it at risk of being passed over as a host for future events. The Coliseum, with assistance from the Tournament Hosts of Greensboro, Greensboro Sports Commission and Convention and Visitors Bureau, is now set to play host to the tournament through 2023. The NCAA also said earlier this month that championships already awarded for the 2017-2018 season will remain in the state.

As approved by presidents of the league's members, the ACC will hold championships in football, women's basketball, baseball, swimming and diving, golf and tennis in North Carolina over the 2017-18 academic year. HB 142 also says that local governments can not pass ordinances protecting LGBT people - or anyone else - from discrimination in employment or public places until 2020.

North Carolina venues became eligible again after Republican legislators and Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, facing a reported NCAA-imposed deadline, negotiated a compromise to replace HB2.

Additional events returning to Greensboro are listed here.

A Mount Union trip to the NCAA Division III national championship football game may be like another home game in the near future.

Altogether, there were 10 Division I championship events selected for North Carolina venues, as well as five Div. II events and eight Div. III events.

Men's Basketball: The ACC Men's Basketball Tournament schedule for the next three years remains unchanged. Albany, which also will serve as a regional host site in 2018, will be hosting for the third time, while Greensboro will be hosting its fifth regional.

In addition to basketball, the city learned that it would host an NCAA regional men's and women's track meet at the University of NorthFlorida's Hodges Stadium in 2019 and 2021.
