Newly released Egyptian-American charity worker visits Trump

Aya Hijazi sits reading a book inside a holding cell as she faces trial on charges of human trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors and using children in protests at a courthouse in Cairo, Egypt, on March 23, 2017.

Trump met with Egyptian President Abdel al-Sisi at the White House earlier this month and helped negotiate Hijazi's release. "It's a great honor to have her in the Oval Office with her brother", said Trump.

The family of an American woman and her Egyptian husband who were held captive for three years in Egypt are crediting President Trump for helping secure their release.

President Donald Trump said he struck "no deal" for the release of an Egyptian-American charity worker who had been detained in the country for almost three years.

President Donald Trump welcomed Aya Hijazi, the Egyptian-American aid worker he and his administration personally helped free from a prison in Egypt and bring back to the USA, to the White House Friday morning. But the former president had a tough stance on Sisi, including barring him from the White House over Egypt's human rights policies. Donald Trump spoke personally to the president of Egypt about it and a week later Hijazi came back to the USA, on a military plane, accompanied personally by one of Trump's top advisors.

President Donald Trump is expected to sign three Executive actions Friday afternoon reviewing tax and financial regulations and potentially roll back federal oversight.

Mr. Trump said he would take no questions from the press, but did respond to one question about the possibility of a government shutdown, saying, "I think we're in good shape". An administration official told the Washington Post today that there had been "assurance from the highest levels [of Sisi's government] that whatever the verdict was, Egypt would use presidential authority to send her home".

A White House official said there was no quid pro quo offered for the releases, but they did receive assurance that the aid workers would not be called back to Egypt if they were found guilty at a later date.

Hijazi's brother, Basel Hijazi, also attended the White House meeting, along with Trump aides Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and Dina Powell.

Hijazi, who grew up in Falls Church, Va., and graduated from George Mason University, was working in Cairo with the Belady Foundation, which she and her husband established as a haven and rehabilitation center for street children in Cairo.

Hijazi's release comes after the Trump administration has been working to improve USA relations with Egypt.

While Trump did not publicly announce he was pressing the Egyptian government for Hijazi's release at the time, he was quietly negotiating her pardon, the Post reports. Their release and the freedom of four other humanitarian workers were negotiated by Trump and White House aides, and Trump sent a US government aircraft to Cairo to bring them home, the Post reported.
