Putin ready to meet Trump in Finland if it hosts summit

Earlier in the day Putin saw via video link an ice-breaking tanker docking for the first time at Russia's Arctic port of Sabetta to test a new route that could open the ice-bound Arctic Ocean to ships carrying oil and liquefied gas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that President Trump was being "barred from implementing his agenda", including improved relations with Moscow, by false accusations about Russian interference in the USA political process.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has responded angrily to claims that the Kremlin attempted to influence the result of the United States election last November, referring to them as "fictional, illusory, provocations and lies".

Before leaving office, former President Barack Obama ordered a full review into hacking aimed at influencing USA elections going back to 2008.

"Do we want to completely destroy our diplomatic relations, to bring the situation to how it was in the 1960s, with the Cuban missile crisis?", Putin said to reporters.

"We very much count on the fact that our USA partners and colleagues will embark on this path of cooperation". "We insist that any blame that Russian Federation could have interfered in the domestic affairs of the United States is slander". He made the remark while responding to his Finnish counterpart, who said he would be happy to receive the Russian and USA presidents in Finland.

Although he did not name Navalny, Putin on Thursday accused "someone, some political forces" of trying to advance "selfish interests" and engaging in "self-promotion in the political arena ahead of some political events including electoral campaigns within the country".

The quote was not, in fact, said by Reagan but by George H.W. Bush during the 1988 Republican National Convention when he told Americans, "Read My lips: No new taxes".

For emphasis, he pronounced the last word in English. "I very much hope that we'll. improve Russian-American relations, for the good of our peoples, and for the whole world". Putin describes the allegations as part of the USA domestic political struggle.

"We can see what is happening, the president is being prevented from carrying out his policies", Putin said of Trump. "People who beheve themselves so recklessly, what are they leading us to?"

Pointing to the attention being paid in the USA to Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak's contacts with members of Mr Trump's team, Mr Putin criticised attempts to cast the interactions as "some sort of spy action".

"Isn't it nonsense?" he said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan is maintaining support for embattled House intelligence committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (NOO'-nehs).

Trump and his administration continue to stand by their denial of allegations of colluding with the Russians to win the election. "Of course they hold meetings", Putin said.

The unexpected size and scope of the protests raised questions about Kremlin strategy -whether it would try to address the protesters' issues or try to undermine or overtly suppress the opposition.
