Rally in Memphis for equality on anniversary of MLK's death

MLK: Beyond Vietnam Speech 50 Years Later

His speech paints a dark vision of the world, a contrast to the optimistic speech he had delivered 4 years earlier, "I Have a Dream". WMRA's Christopher Clymer Kurtz reports how some in Harrisonburg yesterday honored that message.

King Salim Khalfani is former Virginia State Conference NAACP executive director. And the question, Amy and Juan, for the country today is: Where are we on these same issues?

STEPHEN THOMAS: We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society.

"We must mark him now, if we have not done so before, as the most unsafe Negro of the future in this Nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro and national security", FBI Domestic Intelligence Chief William Sullivan wrote in a memo two days later.

According to event coordinator Vicki Ryder, "Those words still ring true today, as we wage war in seven countries overseas while neglecting our human needs here at home". But Dr. King was very clear that you can never separate isms, the triune isms of racism, materialism, or classism, and militarism.

In the last address of his life in Memphis, Dr. King noted that he was happy that the Almighty had allowed him to live in the second half of the 20th century. We are calling upon police to be vigilant: not about arrests necessarily, but about the need to fix relations by treating African Americans the same way as their fellow white citizens.

We are in a moral crisis, just like Dr. King said then.

Tuesday marked the 49 anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. While many whites expressed genuine guilt and sorrow, many others muttered that King had invited his own death.

"The civil rights movement is not a spectator sport". He was not bothered by the sanctimonious rhetoric from the Times and from establishment liberals who raised their eyebrows at his vigil.

The FBI caught backlash Tuesday after tweeting a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. on the anniversary of his assassination.

Kevin Martin, syndicated by PeaceVoice, is President of Peace Action, the country's largest grassroots peace and disarmament organization with more than 200,000 supporters nationwide. We will be marching for these and a dozen other names and attending rallies without end unless there is a significant and profound change in American life and policy.

In Miami-Dade, thousands of workers fought for $15 an hour and the rights of unions, joining racial justice activists in the movement for black lives. So let us make a mighty noise until our leaders with tin ears hear and reverse course.

On April 17th, 1965, two years before Dr. King took the podium, twenty-five thousand people came to Washington as part of a protest called by the Students for a Democratic Society against the USA war on Vietnam.

Dr. King was slain April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.

In the midst of life's challenges - racism, war, poverty, human trafficking, abortion, violence, and evil of every kind - in order to escape the abyss - we need help from God to fulfill the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream today.

A political leader who dined with royalty and met with presidents at the White House found himself increasingly drawn to the plight of poor people around the world.
