Salute to Chuck Berry opens Rock Hall ceremony

Nile Rodgers will receive a special honor at the event held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

HBO will air an edited version of the ceremony at 8 p.m. April 29.

Baez - imitating Donald Trump's particular way of speaking - told the audience gathered at Brooklyn's Barclays Center: "Let us together repeal and replace brutality and make compassion a priority". And it probably fit that newly minted Hall of Famer Jeff Lynne, whose Electric Light Orchestra is, was and always will be known for the wondrous merger of rock and classical, starting off with a mash of Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven".

They were inducted alongside the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Journey and Yes during a concert in NY.

Some mixed feelings would, though, be in line with the band's career-long resistance to chasing fame at the sake of art, evidenced by an aversion to publicity and awards that was hinted at again in a statement the band released inviting all of its former drummers to the induction. Hey, it's deserved: Marty basically invented rock n' roll. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Greg Harris recently shared his thoughts about the various inductees with ABC Radio. Rush's Geddy Lee, who with his fellow Hall of Fame band mate Alex Lifeson presented the prog-rock pioneers, took over bass chores for the late Chris Squire.

"My granddaughter had no clue who I was until I took her backstage to a Taylor Swift concert", said Baez, who added that her granddaughter took a selfie with Swift and now had "newfound respect for her grandmother".

The duo has been involved with album covers and posters for Pearl Jam since the band got their start in the early 1990s.

Pearl Jam is hardly alone in that sentiment when it comes to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I wanted to say a couple of things about the music of this group. "They are without question my favorite band".

"It was 49 years ago tonight I met Chris Squire at a bar", singer Jon Anderson said of the band's founding bass player who died in 2015.

One of the night's most anticipated performances was Journey's.

Alicia Keys performed a medley of Shakur's songs on piano, including "Dear Mama" and "Changes". Standing up from the ivories, she belted "Changes" as the audience sang-along. He also had an unexpected shout out for Chance The Rapper, whom he thanked for his work in in Chicago with the school system and revealed the love his daughter Olivia has for him. Steve Perry is expected to join Journey at the induction, but he will not be performing with them, according to sources.
