Science Enthusiasts To Join Local "March For Science" In Hartford

Christchurch has hosted the first of 500 science marches being held around the world today

What rankles many critics is that the march has positioned itself as the arbiter of what represents legitimate science and what doesn't by accepting partnerships with some groups and rejecting others, decisions that opponents say have been governed more by political than scientific analysis.

Protests are standard on the National Mall, and from the 1963 March on Washington to the recent Women's March, history has been made there time and time again.

I'm an emeritus professor from Williams College who will be going to Boston to participate in the March for Science on Earth Day Saturday.

Lastly, the faculty has complained that the second travel ban implemented by the Trump administration, which banned travel of citizens from six Muslim-majority countries, is extremely detrimental to the status of science in the United States.

The Facebook group dedicated to the march was created days after U.S. president Donald Trump's inauguration, and despite being invitation-only has since gathered more than 838,000 members.

Saturday's March for Science has grown from a single demonstration in Washington, D.C., to a worldwide phenomenon, with related events scheduled in almost 500 cities. The march recognizes that scientists can not stay silent in the face of policies that delegitimize science, and it supports science education and increasing equity, diversity and accessibility in the sciences. "Maybe it is becoming a political issue, but I think that pretending that it's not is potentially" a risk. But the March for Science has received intense levels of interest since organizers in January began discussing the possibility and subsequently launched Facebook and Twitter accounts. Writing recently in an opinion article for the Bay Area News Group, Monterey Bay Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard noted that for the aquarium "science is in our DNA". It is for anyone who wants to ensure that research is continued, that we can continue to collaborate globally and that research is allowed to be accessed by the public. Bonoan will be giving a lecture on honey bees at a museum in MA during the march, but will be wearing a March for Science t-shirt in solidarity.

For example, among the March for Science's partners is the Center for Biological Diversity, which has fought GMOs, despite research showing that genetically modified foods are safe. It is the scientific method that teaches us how to ask questions, form hypotheses, and then - critically - test those hypotheses with rigorous and replicable experiments.

One such group is the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), which will capitalise on the gathering to train scientists and science supporters to be more politically active. "This is not a partisan issue". Even if you're overseas, there are many countries participating.

In the days after the 2017 U.S. presidential inauguration, resistance to the anti-science stance trumpeted during the 2016 campaign grew in online discussions on Reddit.

The march will be followed by several speakers advocating for more support for scientists.

Budget cuts and political assaults on science are expected to draw thousands of demonstrators to the streets in more than 500 cities worldwide Saturday for the first March for Science. I am proud that reliance on sound science is resulting in great progress.

"We want to celebrate science and the role it plays in everyday lives, protect facts and promote dialogue between the scientific community and the public", MacKichan said at a press event on Thursday (20 April).

He believes the event will motivate more people to stand up for what they believe in and act as a wake up call to those who have lost hope of changing the world.

"The protests are often fueled by those with left-leaning political views who were surprised by Trump's victory but have not been quelled by his policies and actions since taking office", the Post reported on Friday. A week later, these values will manifest at the Peoples Climate March where movements for climate, jobs and justice will put forward a vision to build bold solutions that tackle climate change, create and retain fair jobs, and bring forth justice truly for all.
