Senate begins debate on Gorsuch, headed for showdown

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen.

Opposition Democrats insist they have the necessary votes to employ a blocking tactic known as a filibuster.

Democrats now have the votes required to block the nomination of Gorsuch. "We're divided between blue states and red states and very few change back and forth". This includes newspapers that have endorsed Gorsuch but would rather see him replaced as the nominee than be confirmed through a partisan change in Senate rules.

And by the way, the last Democratic majority leader, Sen. Chris Coons said on CNN's "New Day". Jeff Merkley pledged to hold the Senate floor in what appeared to be a last ditch effort to sway votes away from President Trump's Supreme Court pick. In the face of the filibuster, McConnell would be expected to force through the rule change, leading to a final vote on Friday evening to confirm Gorsuch by a simple majority. Merkley, however, said he had no regrets in pushing for the nuclear option almost four years ago.

"This is an extreme nominee from the far right who doesn't believe in the fundamental vision of "We the People" and makes decision after decision through tortured, twisted, contrived arguments defined for the powerful over the people, and that is unacceptable", Merkley said.

Democrats claim the Republicans' treatment of Garland was worse than anything they ever did or are doing, and with Trump in the White House they are under intense pressure from liberal voters to oppose the president on every front. Such a change would impact future Supreme Court nominees and reduce the influence of the minority party.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding a nuclear option, Republicans remain optimistic.

Republicans say that it's up to Democrats to stand down and allow Gorsuch to pass.

He did not explain why he thought leaving the court vacant past year was less important, but concluded he'd back the nuclear option "with great reluctance, not because I have any doubts that Judge Gorsuch will be an excellent justice but because of the further and perhaps irreparable damage that it will do to the United States Senate". Rounds said that during Gorsuch's time as a 10th Circuit Judge, 98 percent of his opinions were unanimous, which Rounds said showed Gorsuch is in the judicial mainstream.

"Judge Gorsuch's dissents from his colleagues on the tenth circuit court of appeals are consistently right-wing, generally seeking to favor big business and other authority and harm the interests of workers and those who have suffered abuse by government officials". "We should now get in a room and come up with a compromise to avoid the nuclear option that so many Republicans are reluctant to take".

On Tuesday evening McConnell officially filed a "cloture" motion, the procedural step created to end debate on a nomination and bring it to a final vote.

McConnell told reporters he has the votes to change the rules.

That use of the "nuclear option" didn't exactly blow the dome off the Capitol.

The showdown over the "nuclear option", expected on the Senate floor Thursday, is likely to be accompanied by much hand-wringing from senators bemoaning the decay of the chamber's traditions of bipartisanship and comity. The Dems could then withhold their "Yes" votes on Gorsuch until the bill passed the Senate.

"We are at a historic moment in the history of the United States Senate" due to actions by both parties, Coons said. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
