South Africans protest Zuma as country downgraded to junk

ANC members in military uniforms who oppose the protest are posted outside.

Hundreds of President Jacob Zuma supporters gathered at the African National Congress (ANC) headquarters, Luthuli House, in Johannesburg, to show their support for the president.

The move send the rand tumbling - an eventually that Zuma was apparently prepared to withstand - and triggered large demonstrations around the country calling for the president to resign.

Daniel Zweni, who proudly held a sign which read "impeach the leech", came out in support from the perspective of a South African who is exhausted of not being able to find lasting employment 23 years into democracy.

In the statement, they touch on the axing of former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene - who they believe was removed because of differing views regarding the country's expensive nuclear programme.

Syriana Maesela, 65, a retiree, was on her way by train to Pretoria to join the march, carrying a South African flag.

- The Constitutional Court found that Jacob Zuma acted illegally, unlawfully and failed to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution in that he disregarded the public protector's remedial action on the Nkandla corruption.

Zuma's reputation has also been damaged by the Nkandla scandal, in which he was found to have used taxpayers' money to upgrade his rural home, and by his close ties to the Gupta business family.

The legality of the protests is still under question as the police said Thursday that the march in the capital did not have the permission of the authorities.

Parliament will vote on a motion of no confidence in the president on April 18, though Zuma has easily survived such votes against him before.

But supporters of Mr Zuma also held demonstrations around the country.

Analysts said Zuma remains in favour in rural areas, contrasting with his waning popularity in urban quarters.

Mr. Zuma's party, the African National Congress (ANC), is struggling to stamp out an internal revolt against him. "The time to act is now".

"Let them wait for 2019 and we will take them on, but the ones that want to remove it undemocratically, MKMVA will rise up to the occasion". The government estimated that about 60,000 protesters marched on Friday, everywhere from big cities to small towns, although organizers said the number was much higher. "Deliver us from evil and Zuma must go".

By the government's official estimate, 10,000 demonstrated in Johannesburg, as many as 8,000 in Durban, and 15,000 in Pretoria, along with smaller numbers in other towns and cities. "We are here to say he must step aside", said Filtane.
