SpaceX conducts historic launch, landing with "used" rocket

Watch Elon Musk react incredulously to SpaceX's recycled rocket landing: “I'm at a loss for words”

The rocket, which was launched into space and back again, deposited a communications satellite from Luxembourg's SES SA into orbit and received epic cheers when it landed on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

Elon Musk and SpaceX enjoyed a huge success this week when they successfully relaunched the first stage of a previously launched Falcon 9 rocket.

Mr Musk has been contemplating on the reuse of rockets for some time; his optimism sees no bounds: "The cost of space travel could be reduced by a factor of a hundred", he once said in his own blog.

We know that Musk and SpaceX began with the idea of making rockets reusable for commercial flights when it was established more than a decade ago, and the company was finally able to achieve this goal in 2015.

The first stage represents the most expensive part of the rocket, according to Musk. "This is going to be ... a huge revolution in space flight".

Yesterday's mission was the first time when a used rocket was successfully re-launched.

For years, many experts stated that landing and re-using rockets couldn't be done and even if done, it wouldn't be economically feasible.

The rocket launched from Florida and then returned on a platform in the ocean. "The first reflight of an orbital class booster did its mission perfectly, dropped off the second stage, came back and landed on the droneship, right in the bullseye".

Perhaps more important to Musk's visionary reputation, the same techniques will likely make portions of the planned Falcon Heavy rocket recoverable, increasing the feasibility of Musk's planned colonization of Mars. The fireball destroyed the not only the rocket, but also the Amos-6 commercial satellite, and significantly damaged the pad.

He said it is also a crucial part of his plan to one day establish human colonies on Mars. The price of the fuel is only about 1% of the total cost of a rocket launch.

Blue Origin, an aerospace company started by another tech billionaire, Jeff Bezos, already has reflown a rocket.

Last month, Musk announced that two private citizens have paid a "significant deposit" to fly around the moon late next year on a mission using the Falcon Heavy. "It's taken us a long time [with a] lot of hard steps along the way". SES had special access; the satellite provider, after all, has a long history with SpaceX.

"That was the cherry on the cake", Musk, who serves as chief executive and lead designer of Space Exploration Technologies, told reporters after launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
