The Crown leads nominations

The Crown's Claire Foy is glad to be leaving but says 'it's not a shock'

Claire Foy is tipped for her portrayal of the younger Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix show's first season, while Jared Harris, John Lithgow and Vanessa Kirby are featured in the line-up for best supporting actors.

The full line-up of Bafta nominations was announced yesterday.

The BBC dramas Fleabag, created by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Sally Wainwright's Happy Valley, are also up for three categories each.

Other nominations went to BBC Two's miniseries The Hollow Crown: The Wars Of The Roses and to its Leading Actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

The nominations for the publicly-voted Virgin TV's Must See Moment are: Game of Thrones: Battle of the Bastards, The Late Late Show with James Corden: Carpool Karaoke with Michelle Obama, Line of Duty: Urgent Exit Required, Planet Earth II: Snakes vs Iguana Chase, Strictly Come Dancing: Ed Balls' Gangnam Style and Who Do You Think You Are?

"Not only is it one of the highlights of the television calendar, it's also a superbly fun night and an opportunity to celebrate the incredible British talent we have behind our very best TV programmes".

Foy and Smith will be stepping down from playing the queen and her husband in Season 3 since "The Crown" will jump several years into the future.

"I am thrilled to be hosting the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards this year".

"We are all giddy and delighted".

However, there is a surprise miss for actor Tom Hiddleston, who won a Golden Globe for his role in tense spy drama The Night Manager.

The best actor category sees Benedict Cumberbatch pick up his fifth TV Bafta nomination for The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, competing against three-time Bafta victor Robbie Coltrane for his lead in the Yewtree-inspired drama National Treasure.

BAFTA winners will be announced at London's Royal Festival Hall on 14 May.
