The People's Climate March Is About More Than Just The Environment

The main April 29 march in Washington will start in front of the U.S. Capitol Building.

"The real decisions are made in this country in elections, and we have now a president and a House and a Senate that are determined to pursue a pro-energy agenda", he said by telephone.

Sarah Lettes, a student at Brown University and one of the organizers, said this event marks President Trump's one-hundredth day in office, and so far, his climate action has been inadequate.

"We've already seen just how effective people power is against this administration: Trumpcare?"

On the website PeoplesClimate.org, organizers say everything they have struggled to move forward in the United States is in peril because "those in power" in Washington are "advancing a dark and risky vision" of America.

The People's Climate March Is About More Than Just The Environment

Another progressive march is planned for Washington, D.C. and other cities and this one is expected to be politicized, too.

Beneath bright sunshine and temperatures soaring into the high 80s, marchers floated balloons and carried signs. Donations to six of those groups were more $1 million each: Center for Community Change, the NAACP, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), People's Action, Public Citizen and Union of Concerned Scientists. She joined about 200 others who climbed into four buses traveling to Washington early Saturday to join in the march.

"I think the whole point of the march is to influence political will", said Masada Disenhouse, co-founder of the climate change group SanDiego350 and a lead organizer with the march. "It impacts him", Holmes told CNN. "Every problem that we're looking at nationally - whether you want to talk about health care, immigration, even terrorism, you name it - it's all going to be exacerbated by this single issue of climate change".

Joining the march in Washington, 16-year-old Olivia Springberg tried to make the issue of climate change personal to Trump. She held a sign that warned how rising sea levels could affect Mar-a-Lago. But it also reflects a growing reality that with the executive and legislative branches of the federal government now led by Republicans, most of whom are opposed to climate regulations, organizers are going to have to turn to the local level over the next few years if they hope to score substantive climate victories.

Trump has also pushed for major reforms at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has faced criticism for backing away from the Obama administration's climate work.
