Tip-in by Ryan lifts Senators over Bruins 4-3 in overtime

Ryan got free in the zone, tapping it in on assists by Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson. Hoffman scored his second of the game on a power play early in the third, and it looked like the Senators were home and cooled.

It was still a poor decision on Nash's part to retaliate the way that he did - even if the refs had called Ryan's check, a power play for the Boston would have been negated by Nash's jab - and after the game the Bruins forward called his actions "selfish".

Cassidy has called on 19-year-old rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Providence call-ups Tommy Cross and Joe Morrow to help fill the void, but Boston has allowed eight goals in its last two games to fall into a 2-1 series hole.

Boston's Tuuka Rask and Ottawa's Craig Anderson have been disappointing in net.

Game 4 is Wednesday night at TD Garden.

An exciting second period on Marathon Monday was the difference-maker in this game as the Bruins came back after being down three goals to bring the game into overtime.

Noel Acciari and David Backes also scored for the Bruins.

The Senators did not score in the first period in either of the first two games of the series. All three games so far have been decided in overtime. During the same break, Patriots owner Robert and president Jonathan Kraft were on the big board.

In Game 3 they had to stave off a furious charge by the Bruins to regain the series lead.

Then Brassard got on the board, slipping a slap shot by Rask for his second goal in two games. For Boston, the ending of the game stuck in many a craw, but the Bruins aren't out of this series by any stretch.

Twenty-three minutes into Monday's game, the Bruins trailed 3-0 before coming to life with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart.

The Senators outshot the Bruins 10-3 in the first, taking advantage of several defensive breakdowns on their side of the ice.

The Bruins went the final 9:47 of the first period without a shot and had one in the final 16:18.

Ottawa's first goal of the night came after Erik Karlsson flipped a pass behind Boston's defense to spring Hoffman on a breakaway. Ottawa D Mark Borowiecki, who sustained a lower-body injury in Game 2, was replaced by Ben Harpur, making his playoff debut.

There would be no scoring in the third period, sending the game to overtime. "There's probably a lot more words, but they called it", coach Bruce Cassidy said of the overtime penalty to Nash. The series is by no means over but given Washington's playoff history, they may be playing tight, while the Leafs are running and gunning with youth, speed, and abandon, and having a ton of fun as a classic hockey town home to an Original Six franchise is beginning to see a path to capturing Lord Stanley's Cup after years in the wilderness stretching back tom 1967.
