Trump White House drops policy of identifying visitors

He also knocked the Obama administration's decision to publicize the visitor logs, which left off some visitors due to national security concerns, arguing that they could keep some people off the visitor log list "for whatever reason".

Mrs. Trump's White House visits have been few and far between since the president's inauguration, and her decision to stay in NY has been widely criticized for costing significant taxpayer money, even prompting a petition demanding that she move to the White House. The changes have drawn intense criticism from government ethics advocates across the city.

Instead, the Trump administration said it would release information under far more limited circumstances: when Freedom of Information Act requests are filed for those visiting offices of the White House characterised under the law as separate agencies, such as the Office of Management and Budget.

According to Meredith McGehee, policy chief at Issue One, a group which seeks to "reduce the influence of money in politics", the president's early fund-raising may be a response to Democrats, who are expected to raise more money because of distaste for President Trump's policies.

In contrast, the Trump administration's decision to end the practice means that no records documenting any White House comings and goings will be released on a routine basis while he is in office, though the officials said some information could be released case by case.

Trump entered office pledging to "drain the swamp" and combat corruption in the nation's Capitol.

As it stands, the American public will not see the visitor logs and who visited the White House for a long time.

The rapid fundraising pace set by Trump and the Republican National Committee underscore their ability to tap into the online donor base that helped the billionaire capture the White House previous year.

The logs, however, were never really transparent and were subject to censorship by the White House. The Trump White House calls it "duplicative".

"I heard the concerns some have with my advising the President in my personal capacity", Ivanka said, adding that she has been "working in good faith with the White House Counsel and my personal counsel to address the unprecedented nature of my role".

Other opponents have cried hypocrisy, pointing out that Trump wants to keep his visitor logs private but has no problem supporting a bill making it legal for Internet service providers to sell their customers' web browsing histories - with neither their knowledge nor consent - to third-party marketers. "We don't have a log on everybody who visits Congress, and they're a coequal branch of government". "In our view, the Freedom of Information Act requires the government to make this information available to the public".

"We'll have to get back to you", said Spicer. "This "Good Friday" news dump is simply the latest in a series of efforts by President Trump to avoid public accountability, and it's not the way to improve the people's declining trust in this administration".

"President Trump's actions betray a fundamental contempt for democracy and a lack of respect for the American people".
