A Disney Movie Is Reportedly Being Held Hostage By Hackers

Bob Iger

TV and film studios are increasingly being targeted by hackers, unnerving an industry that is already dealing with rampant piracy problems worldwide. Iger said that Disney is refusing to pay and the studio is working with the U.S. federal investigators for further actions.

Disney's next two movies scheduled for release are Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on May 26, and Cars 3 on June 16.

A Disney spokesman declined to comment on the threat.

According to industry publication Deadline.com, the hackers are demanding "an enormous amount of money to be paid in Bitcoin". The hackers said that they would release bits of the film until their demands were met.

It is unclear how much the hackers demanded of Netflix, but the company refused to pay.

Iger didn't say what title could be potentially leaked, but with the new film in the Pirates franchise set for release on May 25, it would be a very ripe target.

Hector Monsegur works for Rhino Security Labs, and was a former computer hacker-turned-FBI informant.

The hackers allegedly threatened to release the first five minutes of the movie, then subsequent 20-minute sections until they're paid.

"Attribution is probably the hardest thing the Federal Bureau of Investigation is dealing with here".

But Iger insists the company bosses have chosen not to pay up.

The hack follows a recent cyber attack on internet streamer Netflix that led to 10 episodes of Orange is the New Black being leaked ahead of release.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise has pulled in an nearly incomprehensible $3.72 billion in worldwide box office since the first installment in 2003.
