Anti-ISIL coalition patrolling Turkey-Syria border

Anti-ISIL coalition patrolling Turkey-Syria border

Ankara views the main Kurdish force in northern Syria, the People's Protection Units (YPG) as an offshoot of the banned "terrorist group", the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been engaged in a three-decade war with Turkey.

His comments came amid rising tensions over the weekend along the border, with both Ankara and Washington moving armoured vehicles to the area.

The U.S. has provided air cover and other support to Kurdish forces battling the Islamic State group.

After the Turkish attack, the USA sent military vehicles with American flags to the Syrian side to patrol with YPG fighters, apparently to prevent further clashes.

Which is why the USA appears to have deployed troops along the border: to serve as a deterrent to further Turkish attacks.

Turkey launched a military operation codenamed Operation Eurphrates Shield past year to push back both Isis and Kurds from its border, but ended the mission last month. The fighter alleges that Turkey's president Recep Erdogan wants ISIS to control Syria in order to grow the oil trade.

"Unfortunately. the presence of an American flag along with the [insignia] of a terror organisation called YPG in a convoy has seriously saddened us", Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul, before heading on a trip to India.

Kurdish officials describe the US troop movement as a "buffer" between them and Turkey, according to the Associated Press, while USA officials say it's part of its cooperation with the Kurdish forces against ISIS in Syria.

Erdogan said he will discuss the issue at a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump next month.

He expressed regret that the US-YPG cooperation - which began under the former Barack Obama administration - was being continued under the new president. Consider this: While we are fighting for our people's right to freedom from tyranny, Erdogan is tyrannically denying freedom to his own people.

Ironically, in pushing the United States to choose between us and him, Erdogan is only bringing further attention to the fact that Turkey is not a true ally of the United States.

"Our people are expecting a response from us on why the coalition is not showing Turkey a concrete reaction". I really meant that. The Marines' deployment came days after another intervention, when dozens of army troops drove outside the town of Manbij, riding Stryker armored vehicles, following an earlier conflagration of fighting between Syrian Kurdish troops and Turkish troops. Clashes in the area were reported between Turkish and Kurdish forces Wednesday a day after the Turkish airstrike which also destroyed a Kurdish command headquarters.

They also attacked the positions of the Kurdish militia near the town of Sinjar.

Erdoğan said if the USA ceases its cooperation with the terror groups in Syria and join forces with Turkey, the coalition forces can turn Daesh's de-facto capital of Raqqa into a "graveyard" for the militants.

The patrols, which began Friday, are being led by US special operations forces, a USA official told CNN.

The SDF, which is dominated by elements of the YPG (yes, it's alphabet soup), has been effective, with USA -led coalition support, in clearing ISIS out of large parts of northeastern Syria - and until this latest flare up of tensions, was gearing up for the final offensive against the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa on the Euphrates River.
