Armed man arrested at Phoenix Comicon; security to increase

Aside from the main event there's a bunch to do in downtown Phoenix

Police believe Sterling may be mentally disturbed. He was also wearing body armor under his clothes.

At Sterling's initial court appearance, Maricopa County prosecutor Ed Leiter said he had set a calendar reminder in his phone for May 25 to "kill JDF comicon".

Sterling is being held on $1million cash bond, according to AZ Central.

Sterling reportedly explained to police that he can tell the difference between the good and bad officers.

But his vendetta against cops was only one reason for his attendance, according to police who said he meant to kill Power Rangers actor Jason David Frank.

Immediately after the incident, police did not name Sterling or his intended victim, Frank. A woman who knows the man reported him to police, leading to praise for the woman and her actions. He was also carrying a combat knife, pepper spray and throwing stars.

No one was hurt in the incident. Comic book and science fiction fans showing up at the Phoenix Comicon festival will have all prop weapons - including swords, sabers and fake guns - confiscated after a man showed up at the event with real guns and caused a security scare.

"In this day and age, with everything that's occurring, I think that we just have to be mindful on the safety of everyone that's attending this event", said Fortune.

Massive crowds of attendees are experiencing heavy delays Friday as they wait hours in long lines before eventually going through added security screenings and entering the event. Vendors will still be allowed to seal sealed toy weapons, but the police will require buyers to keep the packages unopened until exiting the venue.

Comicon also reduced the number of entrances to the event.

Many fervently complained that the terms of the ban were not clear on whether other props wouldn't be permitted.

A man in Phoenix was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly attempted to bring guns and knives into the local Comicon, Phoenix Police told ABC News.
