Christian Militias Launch Deadly Assault in Central African Republic

Central African Republic has been plagued by inter-religious violence since 2013 when mainly Muslim Seleka fighters seized power and ousted then-President Francois Bozize, prompting reprisal killings from anti-balaka militias drawn from the Christian minority.

CAR Prime Minister Simplice Sarandji also condemned the attacks and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

Armed assailants attacked civilian populations overnight on 12 and 13 May, targeting in particular Muslims, in the Tokoyo neighborhood of Bangassou, in south-eastern auto, according to MINUSCA.

Guterres, in a statement issued by Stéphane Dujarric, his Spokesman, warned that the attacks could constitute war crimes.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday strongly condemned attacks against the civilian population and UN peacekeepers in the vehicle, urging authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.

Spain reiterates its support for the Central African Republic, the United Nations, MINUSCA and other worldwide actors in their efforts to consolidate peace in the African country.

"The situation is extremely deplorable and we are doing everything to rapidly retake control of Bangassou", said the MINUSCA chief.

The mission says hundreds of assailants targeted the Muslim district of Tokoyo and the United Nations base early Saturday. In January 2017, two Moroccan members of FAR squad of the MINUSCA were killed in an armed attack near the town of Bria on the northeast of the capital Bangui. The attack also claimed the lives of several civilians.

Among Africa's poorest countries, the auto descended into bloodshed pitting the anti-Balaka fighters against the mainly Muslim ex-Seleka rebels.

The attack came just hours after the United Nations held a memorial ceremony to honor five peacekeepers, four Cambodians and one Moroccan, killed on May 8 in a nearby village of Yogofongo, in a deadly attack perpetrated by suspected anti-Balaka elements.
