Egypt's answer to latest attack reflects despair, resolve

Egyptian air raids over Libya have destroyed several camps that trained the militants who killed dozens of Christians in southern Egypt on Friday, the Egyptian military said on Saturday. He prayed "for our brothers, Egyptian Christian Copts who were killed because they did not want to renounce their faith".

The ISIS terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack the Coptic Christians, the second major attack on Egypt's minority community in almost two months.

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told his U.S. counterpart Rex Tillerson that the jihadists who attacked the Christian convoy had trained in Libyan militant camps.

Earlier in the evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the attack, sending condolences to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the Egyptian people.

The attacks were claimed by the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group.

The ISIS said in a statement on Saturday that it had carried out the killing of Egyptian Christians on Friday.

Relatives of Coptic Christians who were killed during a bus attack, surround their coffins, during their funeral service, at Abu Garnous Cathedral in Minya, Egypt, Friday, May 26, 2017.

Sisi hads declared a state of emergency in Egypt after the Islamic State bombedf two Coptic churches in April.

The buses were on a desert road headed to a monastery in the Minya governorate south of Cairo when assailants wearing fatigues and masks fired on them from three four-wheel-drive vehicles, Egypt's Interior Ministry said. Meanwhile, forces loyal to Libya's unity government said on Saturday that 52 of its fighters were killed as they repelled rival militias in fierce clashes in Tripoli.

But many Copts complain that the Egyptian authorities are not doing enough to protect them, says the BBC's Orla Guerin in Cairo.

The Copts follow the teaching of Apostle Mark, who introduced Christianity to Egypt, according to St. Takla Church in Alexandria, the capital of Coptic Christianity.

President Donald Trump said Friday that the "merciless slaughter of Christians in Egypt tears at our hearts and grieves our souls".

Copts make up to 10 percent of Egypts population and is the largest Christian community on the Middle East.

IS jihadists have threatened further attacks.

The Minya attack is the latest in a series of deadly attacks on Egypt's Christians, following the Palm Sunday Suicide Bombings. In December, a suicide bomber targeted a Cairo church.
