Japan, US will enhance North Korea sanctions: White House

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have agreed to "enhance" sanctions on North Korea, including targeting entities that support North Korea's ballistic missile and nuclear programs. It's a world problem. It's a big problem, it's a world problem and it will be solved. "You can bet on that", Trump said in reference to Pyongyang, Efe news reported.

The Group of Seven nations on Saturday addressed North Korea's ever-growing nuclear and ballistic missile program, calling it a grave threat to the world.

However, as North Korea continues launching missiles and taking other provocative actions despite warnings from the nations concerned, there are signs that Japan and the United States - the two nations that are taking the lead on this issue among the G-7 - are feeling a sense of stagnation.

It has carried out two atomic tests since the beginning of past year, insisting it needs nuclear weapons to defend itself against the threat of invasion.

Donald Trump has approved a four-point policy plan on North Korea revolving around "every possible pressure" but a diplomatic solution, according to South Korean lawmakers Thursday. Tokyo and Washington believe that behind the North's continued acts of provocations lies the failure in the global community to take concerted measures against the North, with China, a close ally of North Korea, maintaining its stance of attaching weight to dialogue with the country.

During the meeting between the two presidents, Trump also said he would prevent North Korea from developing the capability to hit US soil with an intercontinental ballistic missile. I think we'll really be focused on the North Korea problem. "North Korea now is rebuffing overtures from China, which is frustrating China", she said.

Pyongyang has ratcheted up military tensions over World War 3 through a series of ballistic missile tests, which many observers said indicated it is on course to develop a longer-range missile capable of reaching the USA mainland.

The United States has for weeks been negotiating a new Security Council sanctions resolution with North Korea's ally China.

Trump's message on North Korea to date has been mixed, saying recently that he would be "honoured" to meet the reclusive state's dictator Kim Jong Un.
