Merkel says Europe must take fate into own hands

Europe can no longer "completely depend" on the USA and United Kingdom following the election of President Trump and Brexit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

A day after German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to question the reliability of the United States as a partner, her office said yesterday that she believes firmly in strong German-US ties and was simply being honest in highlighting policy differences with the White House.

While Germany and Europe would strive to maintain relations with the USA and Britain, Ms Merkel said, "we need to know we must fight for our own future as Europeans for our destiny".

"Those who have accompanied Chancellor Merkel journalistically for a long time know how important the German-American relations are", Seibert said.

At the G7 Summit last week, leaders, including Merkel, failed to convince Trump to commit to stay in the Paris climate deal.

Angela Merkel believe that Germany and Europe can not depend on the U.S. under Donald Trump.

The president has previously suggested he believes climate change is a hoax, tweeting in 2012: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make USA manufacturing non-competitive". "But anyone who puts on national blinkers and has no view of the world around him will ultimately get lost".

Where Europe's relationship with the USA during the Cold War and in its immediate aftermath had a strong emotional component, Merkel's comments suggest she now sees them as more "pragmatic and transactional", said Sylke Tempel, an expert with the German Council on Foreign Relations.

Schulz said Trump resembled an "authoritarian leader" who wants to "humiliate others".

"They are a firm pillar of our foreign and security policy, and Germany will continue to work to strengthen these relations", he said, adding that Merkel had said before that Europe must take its fate into its own hands. "And above all else, we must not submit to Trump's arms-race logic".

Speaking on the campaign trail after contentious summit meetings in Belgium and Italy, Ms. Merkel said: "The times in which we could rely fully on others, they are somewhat over".

Six of the seven G7 nations agreed to stick with their commitment to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement aimed at slowing global warming, but Mr Trump said he needed more time to decide if the United States would abandon the accord. Trump tweeted on Saturday that he would "make a decision" about the agreement next week.

Trump addressed North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members on Thursday, pointedly instructing member nations to increase their defense spending.
