Paul McShane sent off as Reading earn playoff draw at Fulham

Local Berkshire

After setting up the opener in Craven Cottage with a burst straight through the middle of the Fulham defence - uncharacteristic of your ordinary centre back - McShane literally led the way as Jordan Obita put Reading ahead.

Stam sent his team out to win their personal battles.

Reading have arguably been one of the surprise packages in the Championship this season. It was hard to play their usual expansive game for long periods. Reading supporters could not have asked for much more from his first season as manager of the club.

"We started the game very well, very aggressively, not giving them time to play and we succeeded also in going forward and being a threat at times". Stam has already outlined his fear that they could lose some of their key assets this summer if they fail to gain promotion to the Premier League. The Royals have lost just two games at the Madejski Stadium all season. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their excellent home form on Tuesday night.

Jaap Stam insisted Reading's play-off semi-final against Fulham remains wide open. They have scored the most goals out of any team in the play-offs with 85, which was only matched by champions Newcastle United.

"The fans were great, just as they were last weekend".

Jordan Obita's goal early in the second half was quickly cancelled out by Tom Cairney's equaliser for Fulham, meaning the second leg really is victor takes all.

The Republic of Ireland worldwide was sent off in their 1-1 draw with Fulham in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final on Saturday, and as a result will miss the return leg on Tuesday, as well as the final at Wembley should Jaap Stam's side prevail.

Tom Cairney got the equaliser for Fulham on Saturday.

"We need to be aware of that and they need to score". They threw caution to the wind and were rewarded within 12 minutes when Scott Malone's cross was parried by Reading goalkeeper Ali alHabsi into the path of Tom Cairney.

But Cairney bagged a vital equaliser before Reading captain Paul McShane was sent off in the closing stages as Fulham pressed in vain for a victor.

"Jordan twisted his ankle at the end too - he was stretching, trying to book a cross from Fredericks at the end, but there was no tension in the ankle and he twisted it as he landed".
