Physician dragged off flight settles with United

The airline will also no longer rely on law enforcement officials to remove passengers, nor will crew members take passengers' seats.

The three Chicago Department of Aviation officers who pulled Dao off the plane and a supervisor involved in the incident remain on paid leave, said Chicago Department of Aviation spokesman Karen Pride, who declined to comment on the settlement.

Lawyer Thomas Demetrio (L), who is representing David Dao, the passenger who was violently dragged off an overbooked United Airlines flight, speaks as lawyer Stephen Golan (C) and Dao's daughter Crystal Dao Pepper look on during a press conference in Chicago, Illinois, the United States, on April 13, 2017.

United Airlines incident: What went wrong?

The US airline has been trying to fix its image since the April 9 incident, in which Chicago airport security officers dragged the 69-year-old doctor off a full flight in order to make room for airline crew.

"Dr. Dao has become the positive unintended champion for the adoption of changes which will certainly help improve the lives of literally millions of travelers", Demetrio said.

Dao suffered a concussion, a broken nose and teeth, according to his lawyers.

"Every customer deserves to be treated with the highest levels of service and the deepest sense of dignity and respect", Mr Munoz said in announcing the airline carrier's change in policy.

He said Dao was also impressed that “United stepped up to the plate.”. Dr Dao had refused to volunteer his seat.

The dragging was a major public-relations crisis for United.

Uniteds response in the immediate aftermath was widely criticized. Munoz first defended the airline and described Dao as "belligerent" before publicly apologizing days later and vowing to do better. Long said Dao was verbally and physically abusive and was flailing his arms before he lost his balance and struck his mouth on an armrest.

The departments roughly 300 officers guard the citys two main airports but are not part of the regular Chicago police force.

Also Thursday, the airline released a report detailing mistakes that led to the incident.

The settlement comes as United promised earlier Thursday to increase the limit - to $10,000 - on payments to customers who give up seats on overbooked flights, reduce the number of oversold flights and improve employee training.

United representatives have not said whether ticket sales have dropped since Dao was removed from the jet.
