Syria accuses Israel of strike near Damascus airport

Syria's state-run Sana news agency said Israel had fired several missiles from inside the Occupied Golan Heights, 37 miles south of Damascus, striking a military installation south-west of the airport that serves both military and civilian flights.

Civil war broke out in Syria in 2011 after an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad but escalated as militant groups and regional players such as Iran, Turkey Russia and Israel became involved.

"A thud could be heard in Damascus city and surrounding areas", said a statement from Rami Abdulrahman, the founder of the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Photos of a major blaze posted to social media sites appear to confirm the suspicion that either a fuel storage unit or explosive weapons dump were hit.

"The Patriot Aerial Defence System intercepted a target above the Golan Heights", the official Israeli army Twitter account said, without elaborating.

Four cargo planes originating from Tehran landed in Damascus hours before the strike, according to Flightradar24.com. Israel has not confirmed the strike, and usually does not acknowledge its airstrikes inside Syria.

But Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said it was consistent with Israel's policy to prevent arms transfers through to Hezbollah, while stopping short of confirming his country was behind the incident.

"The prime minister has said that whenever we receive intelligence that indicated an intention to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah, we will act".

It was the third time in less than a week that medical facilities in the province, controlled by rebels and jihadist groups, had been hit in air strikes.

Things are getting tense between Israel and Syria, with the latest provocation coming before sunrise Thursday.

On Wednesday, Israel's Defense Ministry said Minister of Defense Avigdor Liberman had discussed the situation in Syria with Russia's Defense and Foreign Ministers during an worldwide conference in Moscow.

Assad also said that no country which had aided the Syrian opposition should be allowed to take part in Syria's post-war reconstruction.
