Trump Delays Decision on Paris Climate Accord as Allies Reaffirm Commitment

"Understanding this process, the heads of state of the government of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom and the presidents of the European Council and of the European Commission reaffirm their strong commitment to swiftly implement the Paris agreement, as previously stated at the Ise-Shima Summit".

"I think he's leaning to understand the European position", Cohn said. The U.S. president also told him he had refused to see her in January despite the fact she had waited for a long time in his New York Trump Tower.

"He came here to learn".

"He digested that", Cohn said. "His views are evolving, which is exactly as they should be".

The president's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, chimed in to say that the president's decision about whether to remain in the agreement would ultimately be based on what's best for the United States, to which Cohn concurred. The pact is aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

The Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015 by 195 countries, states that the parties will act to limit global warming and greenhouse gas emissions. The global average temperature has already increased about 1°C.

Italy is keen to encourage the world's wealthiest nations to support African countries in developing their economies, so fewer young people will feel forced to make the unsafe journey to Europe.

At one point this week, the words "Paris Agreement" were almost excluded from the statement, underscoring how contentious the issue became in Taormina, said a Canadian government official who spoke on the condition on anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

But since taking office, Trump has not moved to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreement.

"Trump can try to block climate action all he wants, but he has no hope of stopping the global momentum to fight risky climate change and secure a clean and safe energy future". But he has not retracted the pledges themselves.

During his election campaign a year ago, Trump threatened unilateral tariffs on Mexican and Chinese goods and said he would quit the North American Free Trade agreement unless it is renegotiated to his liking. More flexibility was a central demand by the president, who says the accords could be costly for U.S. businesses and drain jobs in the United States.

President Trump's pressuring of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states to pay their fair share for a common defense is "consistent" with the message delivered by past administrations, Secretary of Defense James Mattis told "Face the Nation" in an interview on Saturday.

Leaders of the Roman Catholic Church broached the topic when Trump visited the Vatican.

Last week, 22 Republican senators, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, sent a letter to Trump urging him to exit the Paris accord.
