Turkey Slams US Over 'Aggressive' Acts Against Bodyguards

A diplomatic dispute deepened when Turkey summoned the American ambassador in Ankara to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Monday, to protest "the aggressive and unprofessional actions taken" by American security personnel against Turkish security officers.

The "lapses of security", it added, "were caused by the inability of U.S. authorities to take sufficient precautions at every stage of the official program".

In the crackdown, police have arrested two teachers who are on hunger strike.

Turkey has slammed the United States for the way it treated two Turkish bodyguards during a recent trip by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Washington. The guards had been filmed hitting and kicking protesters in the area while Erdogan was watching the scene.

The behavior of the security guards was condemned by US officials, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who said on Sunday that while he would wait until an investigation into the fight was complete, he directed Bass to communicate "that this is simply unacceptable".

"The conduct of Turkish security personnel earlier this week is deeply disturbing", the State Department official said.

Ankara has announced that they have summoned United States ambassador to Turkey, John Bass, to appear before Turkish Foreign Ministry officials to answer for the "aggressive and unprofessional actions".

For all this, it doesn't really appear that the allegedly improved U.S. -Turkey relations under Trump are bearing much fruit.

An official at the State Department said the pitched battle was being investigated.

Additionally, the Hurriyet reports that Brunson has denied having contact with FETO members and denied ever visiting the now-closed Gulen-linked news outlet Zaman.

The official said Bass told the Turks the USA was looking into what happened and why — an apparent nod to Turkey's demand for "a full investigation of this diplomatic incident". John McCain shortly after Tillerson's comments on Fox News Sunday. "The State Department has raised its concerns about those events at the highest levels".

When the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, arrived at the Turkish embassy at Washington, he was greeted by demonstrators who had assembled before the embassy, peacefully demonstrating against his draconian policies.

Erdogan's trip came after the US government's decision to supply weapons to the Syrian Kurdish militia, People's Protection Units (YPG), in their fight against the Islamic State.

"The violent response of your security detail to peaceful protesters is wholly unacceptable and, unfortunately, reflective of your government's treatment of the press, ethnic minority groups and political opponents", they said in a letter just days ago.
