UN Security Council vows sanctions over N. Korea missile test

North Korea on Monday said the missile it successfully tested a day earlier was a "new ground-to-ground medium long-range strategic ballistic rocket" capable of carrying a "large-size heavy" nuclear warhead - and striking the USA mainland.

North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper devoted half of its six-page Monday edition to coverage of the missile test, with vivid color photographs of the launch and jubilant leader Kim Jong Un celebrating with military officers.

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of - North Korea's latest ballistic missile test may be almost as big a deal as its propaganda machine claims.

North Korea has never launched a missile that can fly across the Pacific. Schilling also predicts the missile could have flown almost 2,800 miles (or about 4,500 kilometers) if launched on a maximum trajectory - which would put Guam within striking distance of North Korean missles but "won't greatly change the strategic balance" because "aside from Guam, there aren't really any interesting targets in that range".

North Korean ambassador to China Ji Jae-ryong also said Pyongyang's ballistic missile test was part of the country's efforts to develop ways to defend itself. The missile fell in the Sea of Japan after flying some 500 miles.

Council diplomats say the US and China, the North's closest ally, have been working on a new sanctions resolution.

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea reached a peak in recent weeks, with Washington saying military action was an option under consideration and Pyongyang issuing threats of its own.

"With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil. the president can not imagine that Russia is pleased", the statement said.

Experts said Sunday's successful launch signals major advances in developing an intercontinental ballistic missile, such as mastery of re-entry technology and better engine performance key to targeting the United States.

The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Tuesday to discuss North Korea's latest missile launch, diplomats said on Sunday.

"As South Korea's diplomatic situation matures, North Korea should also show a more mature attitude, not a childish one, and contribute to (establishing a better) diplomatic relationship".

What has North Korea been saying?

State media paraphrased North Korea's leader as saying that "the most ideal weapon systems in the world will never become the eternal exclusive property of the US", warning that "the USA should not. disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific operation region are in (North Korea's) sighting range for strike". He also warned North Korea not to test his resolve.

US President Donald Trump's administration has made North Korea a priority security issue.

While Trump has said he'd be "honored" to talk with leader Kim under favorable conditions, Haley seemed to rule out the possibility.

The US said the missile was sacked from Kusong, a city which plays home to much of North Korea's military activity, including munitions factories and uranium mines.

Last week, it demanded that the South hand over its spy chief.

The White House statement called for stronger sanctions against the North but did not directly threaten military action.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the launch as "counterproductive, damaging, dangerous".
