Valley Grove board looks at budget

Budgeting began in earnest in January and concluded in late April with a plan that increases spending by $360,374 next year from $10.96 million this year.

Voters also supported the purchase of six buses through a lease financing program, with 498 voting in favor and 109 voting against. Each will get three-year terms on the board.

The East Hampton School District's $68.3 million budget proposal, a slight increase over previous year but still under the state's cap on tax levy increases, was approved by a vote of 291 to 53. Proposition 3 also passed, 1,095 to 349, which allowed the expenditure of $1,885,000 from the renovation and improvement facilities fund. Proposition 4, which extended the technology replacement fund for an additional five years, passed 1,031 to 400.

Although earned income taxes have remained flat in the current year at $2.1 million, the proposed budget anticipates a $50,000 bump in the fiscal year that starts July 1 "in anticipation of an increase in the economy", according to the figures Adams provided.

He was also asked to comment on the wide margin of voter approval of the budget.

In Holley, with 337 and 291 votes respectively, Robin Silvis and Andrea Newman were elected to a three-year term on the Holley School Board. Kevin Weaver and James Zappie garnered 65 and 58 votes, respectively. Voters approved the budget, with 294 voting in favor and 114 voting against.

The Democrats could be facing a primary if they follow their screening committee's recommendation and nominate attorney Jeff Bragman to be a Town Board candidate with incumbent Councilwoman Kathee Burke-Gonzalez. This will raise the tax levy increase by 2.89 percent, below the legal limit set by the state.

Morris' budget passed 116-43, with the capital reserve 108-48 in favor and the library passing 90-69.

The budget vote and Board of Education election took place on Tuesday. Incumbent Trustee Barbara Pettersen and newcomer Cory Notrica ran unopposed for two seats on the Board of Education. Mauger tallied 541 votes as Jasen garnered 442.

To view the budget, go to eastland308.com under District Info. The two people running for school board got the two seats: Amanda Finch with 143 votes and Marisa Orezzoli with 142.

They also approved the 2017-18 budget of $34,796,676, an increase of 2.6 percent, 526 to 123. Also when looking at vacation days during the second semester next year, students will get back the President's Day holiday on February 19, as well as an additional day over Easter (March 29-April 2) for a total of five days off for the holiday.

However, Ljungberg said he doesn't feel the budget defeat Tuesday was due to the increases, calling the proposal very conservative. The budget, 98-23; library, 107-14; Bus purchase, 89-32; establish capital reserve for construction, 98-22 and establish capital reserve for vehicles, 90-29.

Bedden will leave the school system on June 30, 2017. "In addition to maintaining all academic programs, the budget adds positions to accommodate for enrollment increases, maintains favorable class sizes and meets pressing student needs".

Worcester's budget and bus propsitions passed, 146-39 and 144-40, with the school board going to Tanya Shalor over Justin Frost 124-55.
