After postponement, Nadal, Djokovic try to set semi in Paris

First French Open semi-final set up as Bacsinszky and Ostapenko win

However, she lost her serve trailing 4-5 to hand the first set to Wozniacki.

Ostapenko said: "We are good friends, because we played the doubles in China a year ago, and that's how I got to know her, she is a really nice person. I think last couple of games I was just playing really, really well".

On the cusp of 28, Bacsinszky has been through enough to have some perspective, and she spoke thoughtfully about the privilege she feels as an elite tennis player.

The two men's quarterfinals scheduled for Tuesday were postponed after showers caused more than 3½ hours of rain delays. I'm looking forward to playing it.

"Lucky for her that she's just 20 but maybe lucky for me as I have more experience!"

Torrential rain forced Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's quarter-finals at the French Open to be delayed until today.

There were, though, tears of disappointment over on Court Philippe Chatrier, where Kristina Mladenovic's hopes of becoming a first French champion since Mary Pierce in 2000 evaporated as she was beaten 6-4 6-4 by Timea Bacsinszky, the number 30 seed from Switzerland. "After we stopped in the third set, 2-1, I won five games in a row".

Ostapenko has now won all four lifetime matches with Wozniacki, three of which came on clay and two of which took three sets.

Having battled back from a set and 5-1 down against Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals, she survived another battle to beat second seed Karolina Pliskova 6-4 3-6 6-3, ultimately making her clay-court prowess count.

Ostapenko's arrival in the final four on the eve of her 20th birthday was much harder to foresee. It will be really great to play here when it will be my birthday.

Mladenovic fought hard

"I went to bed more or less at 11 p.m.", Bacsinszky said.

Ostapenko said: "In some moments I felt a little bit tight because it was already the semi-final".

Neither Young nor Gonzalez have ever been in the final of a Grand Slam tournament.

Ostapenko is looking forward to her birthday showdown against Bacsinszky, adding: "We are good friends, because we played the doubles in China past year, and that's how I got to know her".

Mladenovic tried to look on the positives of her French Open campaign, which at one point had been in doubt because of a back problem.

After seeing off Mladenovic, Bacsinszky said the weather conditions which saw heavy rain as well as 30km/h winds had been tough to deal with.

She started life as a ballroom dancer; now Jelena Ostapenko is two wins away from winning her first Grand Slam title.

Ostapenko and Bacsinszky will play each other on Thursday, which happens to be the date of both competitors' birthdays. "I am going to try to enjoy it because great players are here and it is a great place to play". Djokovic is the defending champion.

One Frenchwoman however does remain in the draw: The player Mladenovic won the doubles title with previous year in Paris, Caroline Garcia, who will play second-seed Karolina Pliskova in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

Nine-time champion Nadal is due to take on compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, while title-holder Djokovic faces sixth seed Dominic Thiem in a repeat of last year's semifinal.
