Amazon is 'awfully scary,' and a thing of wonder — Netflix CEO

Hastings clarified that he doesn't believe Netflix "picked" a fight with Cannes, but the controversy worked out as free press for the two films, which "got it on their own, on artistic merit". Granted there are several things driving this ignominious proclamation, including said interconnection deals and the fact that Netflix recently secured a deal with Comcast bringing Netflix to Comcast cable boxes.

Hastings referred to Amazon as "awfully scary" on CNBC that because of Amazon's big spending on original content that is meant to make it more competitive with Netflix.

In both interviews, Hastings described Amazon's streaming model as increasingly broad. "They are trying to repeal the basic laws of business".

"Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and worldwide cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. So we are continuing to watch them". What we can be is the emotional connection brand - like HBO or Netflix.

Hastings' assessment reflects similar thoughts in various industries, from retail to cloud computing, book publishing, streaming music and logistics - all businesses that are being ruffled by Amazon as it stretches its operations across the economic landscape.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune's technology newsletter. Many reports from the festival suggested that the tension was ongoing - including tweets about Okja's Netflix title card being booed, as well as the films' stars and creative team (and totally unrelated industry peers) weighing in on the drama. "If we try to out-Amazon Amazon, then that's a losing battle".

The mere threat of the FCC's net neutrality rules appears to have put an end to the practice (for now), but not before Netflix paid up. Meanwhile, Netflix's Hastings has suddenly become relatively quiet on the matter. We don't think of it as a big overlap that we are driving cord cutting. "So think of it as the internet doesn't yet add much value to the sports experience".

He noted how he is extremely impressed with Amazon.

Meanwhile, Netflix's ever-growing budget for original content is still growing after increasing from roughly $5 billion a year ago to a planned $6 billion in 2017. "That's what we want", he said. It's an interesting response, given the frequent criticism that some of Netflix's original series are just overly long movies, drawn out for little reason.

Cannes should focus on the artistic quality of movies, instead of being influenced by the politics and commercial leanings of festival's board of directors, Hastings said at the Code Conference.

"It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable", said Holland in a statement issued by the streaming giant.

Hastings says that, going forward, Netflix will increase its originals budget "a lot".
