Amnesty calls for refugee support in Uganda

On Monday the UN Refugee Agency reported that about 65.6-million people have been displaced due to war‚ violence and persecution - an "unprecedented high".

The number of refugees is more than the population of Britain and an increase of 300,000 over the previous year. There were another 2.8 million asylum seekers, the report said.

Afghanistan has the second largest number of refugees: Around two and a half million Afghans have fled their home and are seeking refuge in other countries. People internally displaced are defined as still living in their home country, but have nowhere to actually live.

He also called for properly protecting and caring for the world's refugees, internally displaced and asylum-seekers - who now number 22.5 million, 40.3 million, and 2.8 million, respectively.

In 2016, 22.5 million refugees fled their home country - the highest number since the agency was founded in 1950.

"By any measure this is an unacceptable number", said UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi, urging "solidarity and a common goal in preventing and resolving crisis".

Syria's six-year civil war remained the largest single source of displacement, with 12 million people — around two-thirds of the population — either uprooted within the country of having fled overseas, the group said. The ranking does not include the 5.3 million registered Palestinian refugees.

It also illustrates the need for countries and communities supporting refugees and other displaced people to be robustly resourced and supported - the absence of which can create instability, have consequences for life-saving humanitarian work, or lead to secondary displacement.

Around two thirds of refugees find themselves in a "protracted refugee system;" when at least 25,000 refugees of the same nationality have been in exile in a particular nation for five years.or refugees who have been displaced for over five years.

Uganda received the largest number of new refugees in 2016 in the world, said new figures released by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Monday.

That number marks a jump of just 300,000 from the end of 2015, but is more than six million higher than at the end of 2014, according to a fresh report published by the United Nations refugee agency.

By population, Syria still accounts for the biggest numbers of displaced people overall, with 12 million people (almost two thirds of the population) either displaced internally or having fled overseas as refugees or asylum seekers.

"At the same time, they are not adequately funding reception of refugees in poor host countries", added Jan Egeland.

"This equates to one person becoming displaced every three seconds - less than the time it takes to read this sentence", UNHCR pointed out in a statement.

Half of all refugees were children.

"Turkey continues to be for the third consecutive year, the largest hosting country", said Grandi.

The report called the large number of unaccompanied children asking for asylum a growing and unsettling development.

"The richest and most stable countries from Europe to the U.S.do their uttermost to keep refugees away".
