Attorney General Jess Sessions to publicly testify Tuesday to Senate Intelligence committee

In addition to the Senate Intelligence Committee's investigation into Russia's role in US politics, special counsel Robert Mueller is leading an independent inquiry into Russia's meddling and potential links between Russians and the Trump campaign, after being appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last month. While Comey did not run to tell Sessions of his concerns over what the President supposedly said about the investigation of Michael Flynn, Comey did say he asked Sessions to shield him from Mr. Trump, anxious by the President's phone calls and questions.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday afternoon in an open session, the committee announced Monday.

Questions have arisen about Sessions' own involvement in the Trump campaign and his meetings with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US.

Sessions could be asked about that part of Comey's testimony, as well as his role in Comey's firing last month.

Nearly a month after suggesting that he recorded conversations with Comey in the White House, writing in an early-morning Twitter message that "Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations", the president has yet to definitely answer the question of whether any such tapes even exist. The committee shortly after said the hearing would be open. The president also asserted that "some of the things" Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday "weren't true", but called on another reporter without elaborating. "When a current or former government employee wants to cooperate and turn over the requested information, the privilege itself won't - and can't - stop him or her", wrote Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas School of Law, where he specializes in national security law, Monday, June 12. As former US Attorney Preet Bharaa told George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" this past Sunday, "No one knows whether there is a provable case of obstruction of justice".

Comey said Trump told Sessions and other administration officials to leave the room before Trump asked him in February to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

For most Americans as well as for most lawmakers, whether to believe Comey or Trump is not a close contest.

She said Sessions should also testify before the Judiciary Committee, because it was better suited to explore legal questions of possible obstruction.

Trump's aides have dodged questions about whether conversations relevant to the Russian Federation investigation have been recorded, and so has the president.

Sessions' appearance before the intelligence committee is an indication of just how much the Russian Federation investigation has shaded his tenure.

Lawmakers, including Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate and to determine if Sessions committed perjury when he denied having had meetings with Russians.
