Recently-crowned Indonesia Open champion Kidambi Srikanth continued his brilliant run in the Australia Open Super Series made it to the semi-final of the event defeating fellow Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth at Sydney.

However, disappointment was in store for India in the women's singles as Rio Olympics silver-medallist PV Sindhu and defending champion Saina Nehwal squandered opportunities galore to go down in thrilling three-game matches.

Later in the day, P.V. Sindhu lost her quarter-finals match to World No.1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei. Srikanth displayed a variety of strokes as he led 11-7, attacking Shi's backhand, pushing him deep to open up the forehand court.

It was a closely-fought encounter, as the two players, who know all about each other's game, went full tilt into the match.

In the second set, trailing 6-9, Sai won three points in a row to make it 9-9.

Srikanth will face anyone between Yuji of China and Denmark's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, whoever emerges as victorious in the second quarter final match. But like the first game, Srikanth upped the ante and streaked to 15-8 lead. India, ranked sixth in the world, crashed out of the podium race after suffering a 2-3 loss to 14th placed Malaysia in a quarter-final match on Thursday. Coming back, the Hyderabadi never allowed the Chinese to settle and extended her lead to 18-10 and easily winning it 21-10.

Shi, who had reached the final at the All England Open earlier this year, struggled, as he netted several crucial shots and missed points via misjudgement, giving a 19-10 lead to Srikanth.

Japan's Nozomi Okuhara also made it to the last four following a 21-12, 23-21 victory over compatriot Sayaka Takahashi.
