British leader reaches tentative deal to shore up rule

A fresh election is the only alternative available to British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives other than agreeing a deal with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to remain in government, a senior Conservative lawmaker said on Sunday.

Anand Menon, professor of politics at King's College London, said her lack of a parliamentary majority made it far more likely that Britain would leave the European Union without a deal.

Corbyn also said there's enough opposition in Parliament and in May's own party to topple the government.

The Conservative-backing Daily Telegraph newspaper had earlier warned: "May must accept that the result is an indictment of the furtive way she does business".

"We can't go on with a period of great instability" he said, adding that the Labour Party was ready to fight another election campaign.

The DUP agreed to supporting to the government on a "confidence and supply" basis, which would involve it supporting a Conservative minority government on key votes in parliament but not forming a formal coalition partnership.

Mr Corbyn didn't think Mrs May could survive after failing to win a majority and was keen to bring her down.

The details of the agreement "will be put forward for discussion and agreement" at a cabinet meeting on Monday, a day before the new parliament meets, the spokesman said.

"Theresa May is certainly the strongest leader that we have at the moment", David Jones, a junior Brexit minister, told the BBC. "Jeremy Corbyn has done a huge job here, he's done pretty well on Snapchat, Facebook, you know - stuff young people look at - and we've been inspired by this", French said.

A senior Conservative lawmaker was in Belfast on Saturday for talks with the DUP, a spokeswoman for May's office said. It said Britain was "effectively leaderless" and the "country all but ungovernable".

The arrangement with the DUP will make governing easier, but it makes some Conservatives uneasy. On Friday, May was expected to appoint a team that will take on one of the most demanding negotiations in British history.

She said: 'We've got Theresa May squatting in Downing Street.

Cooper, who was defeated by Corbyn in the 2015 Labour leadership contest, said the Parliamentary party had "changed a lot" since last year's European Union referendum and was now fully behind Corbyn.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a snap general election, which resulted in a hung parliament as the Conservatives failed to secure an overall majority in the House of Commons and fell short of the required 326 seats.

The two parties are broadly politically aligned, but it remains to be seen what price the DUP will demand for its support.

But Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, who is gay, was among the first to express disquiet over a deal with the DUP, which is opposed to abortion and gay rights.

Davidson, one of the few Conservatives to emerge as a victor from the election after she increased the party's presence in Scotland, said she had demanded, and received, "categoric assurance" from May that the policy would not change.
